Fitzgerald, Gromala and Hahn to join Badgers in 2017
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's golf team will add three players to the roster next fall, head coach Todd Oehrlein announced Thursday. Claire Fitzgerald, Alyssa Gromala and Mackenzie Hahn will all join the Badgers in 2017.
"We are extremely excited to have Alyssa, Claire, and Mackenzie joining our program," Oehrlein said. "All three have impressed us with their maturity and their excitement for the University of Wisconsin. They display the characteristics that we love as student-athletes and have the potential to be outstanding players in our program. They are dedicated, hard-working and we are thrilled that they chose Wisconsin."
Claire Fitzgerald – Sanford, Fla./ Seminole County Virtual School
Claire Fitzgerald was a semifinalist at the 2016 Ione D. Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur Championships, a match play event. She also tied for fifth place in the stroke play portion of the 2016 Florida Women's Amateur Championship. The 2013 Gold Coast Junior Golf Association Player of the Year, Fitzgerald has carded three career hole-in-ones. She is a member of the National Honor Society and currently ranked second academically in her class at Seminole County Virtual School.
Oehrlein on Fitzgerald: "Claire is a very consistent player. She drives the ball accurately and I've been impressed with her short game and putting when we've seen her play. She has had a great deal of success competing against very strong competition in Florida."
Alyssa Gromala – Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic H.S.
Alyssa Gromala joins the Badgers from Mokena, Illinois. At Providence Catholic High School, Gromala was a four-time IHSA Class 2A state qualifier. She also qualified regionally for the IMG Junior World Championships. The medalist at the 2015 Oak Forest Invitational, Gromala shot the low round of any junior at the 2016 Illinois State Amateur Championship. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned high honors every semester in high school.
Oehrlein on Gromala: "We're very excited about Alyssa and the growth that she continues to show as a player. She took tremendous strides this past summer and is a very hard worker. She's incredibly passionate, loves the game, and loves to compete."
Mackenzie Hahn – Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton H.S.
Mackenzie Hahn out of Spring Grove, Illinois, joins her brother Jordan, a sophomore on the men's team, as a Badger. Hahn was a four-time IHSA Class A state qualifier, finishing as the runner-up as a senior. She won the Kishwaukee River Conference individual title, leading Richmond-Burton to the team title, in 2016 and was named conference golfer of the year. She also finished second at the MAJGT Purdue Classic in 2016. The 2015 Northwest Herald Girl's Golfer of the Year, Hahn tied for fourth at the 2015 IHSA Class A State Tournament. She was also a four-year letterwinner in basketball and member of the National Honor Society.
Oehrlein on Hahn: "I love that Mackenzie is a multi-sport athlete and is very strong athletically. She is a physically strong golfer which will be a strength of hers in college. She has taken great strides in all areas of her game and we're very excited about the improvement that she continues to show."
