Postgame Quotes: Wisconsin vs. Minnesota

Quotes from Johnson and McKibbon
UW head coach Mark Johnson
On what made the difference today:
"In today's game, it was a power-play goal and they were able to capitalize in the second period. Our defenseman lost her stick and they converted on it and got an opportunity on the power play. We had a couple chances but weren't able to get the puck in the net. A lot of little things and then when you do get an opportunity, who is going to be able to capitalize on that opportunity. There were able to do it. In the third period we had some pretty good looks but we weren't able to get the puck into the net."
On the lack of penalties in the game:
"I think coming into the series, the way the two teams play you're not probably going to see a lot of penalties, maybe two of three on each team. It's a game where you're not going to get a lot of great opportunities so when you do get your opportunities you try to capitalize on them. Unfortunately for us today we weren't able to do that."
On what changed for the team in the third period:
"Minnesota came out to start the game and they had a good jump and good puck possession. They put us on our heels for most of the first period. I thought parts of the second period we played better and finally got our legs in the early part of the third period, started to create the opportunities and got some good offensive zone time. But again, if you don't put the puck in the net, it doesn't work real well. We weren't able to do that today. We'll show some video tomorrow and get prepared and hopefully come out to start tomorrow's game like we finished off today."
On ARD:
"She was good. She held us in there the first period, they had a couple flurries especially on their first power play and she made a couple real tight saves that kept them off the scoreboard so I thought she was quite sharp having not played in a few weeks."
On the crowd:
"Oh it was good, I mean, I don't know if we got too excited and too fired up to play, but it's good to see a full house. I hope they got entertained, it was a one goal-game until they ended up getting that empty net goal. Â Hopefully tomorrow we come back and play with the same energy that we had in the third period, create some opportunities and get the puck into the net."
Senior Sydney McKibbon
On it being disappointing not seeing shots go in:
"Yeah, definitely I think they're a really skilled team, credit to them. I thought they played a great game, but it seems like when we play them it kind of comes down to who kind of gets the bounces. If Annie (Pankowski) hits the post, goes in the net, it's a completely different game just so I think they maybe got a couple extra bounces and we didn't today."
Â
On what to improve on for tomorrow:
"I think we were talking about crashing the net, keep getting pucks on the net. I think in that third period we had a couple of harder shots that produced more rebounds so tomorrow we have to crash the net a bit more and try and get her moving side to side. "Â
On what Coach Mark Johnson or anyone talked about before the third period:
"Kind of just keep it up. I thought we played a pretty solid game for 40 minutes. When it's a 1-0 game anything can happen so I think we just tried to push the puck forward, get shots on net but unfortunately we didn't get one in the net."
Â
On whether the passing game opened up because of the broken stick:
"Maybe a little bit, I was kind of on the back door so I only saw it from a certain view but I think either way that shouldn't really be open and people should've had someone there at least to try and block it off but they have a great power play, I think they're number one in the nation on the power play, so that's hard to go up against."
On what they have to do for tomorrow:
"I think we learn from it. We got to put pucks in the net. You can't win a game when it's 0-0. So I think we learn from that and I think we got to come out flying tomorrow in the first eight, 10 minutes, it's going to be huge for us and try and get a couple goals in the first period."
On whether she was satisfied with the quality of chances:
"Yeah I think at times, forty shots or so on the net, that's pretty good but I think at times maybe we were just throwing it at the net but I think in the third period we had the most chances we've had all game so I think that was good that we built on that over the game."Â
On the team's strategy in the third period:
"Yeah I think it was to keep peppering her. She played a great game like I said but we were hoping one of those would go in but I mean a 1-0 game we are going to be putting shots on the net no matter what the time is. Unfortunately they just didn't go in today."
On tomorrow's game:
"I think we've got to just recover today, watch video, learn from our mistakes. The TV timeouts are nice at times because it slows the game down the game a little bit. I think that first period flew by, I don't think there were many whistles. It changes the game completely and we just got to be ready for that."
