MADISON, Wis. – Nigel Hayes is poised to leave a legacy as one of the best in Wisconsin basketball history. He added another honor to his resume on Monday, as he was named Big Ten Player of the Week by the league office.

The first career conference player of the week honor for Hayes, he averaged 18.5 points, 8.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game in wins over No. 22 Syracuse and Oklahoma last week.

Orchestrating a 77-60 win over Syracuse in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the senior forward from Toledo, Ohio, finished just one point shy of the second triple-double in school history. Hayes registered 9 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists, becoming the first Badger to post double-figure assists in a game since Jordan Taylor in 2011.

Hayes followed up later in the week with a game- and season-high 28 and a game-high six assists in a 90-70 win over Oklahoma.

Hayes is one of only four players in the Big Ten averaging 13 points, five rebounds and three assists per game this season. Having long been a versatile player for the Badgers, Hayes is the NCAA's only active player with 1,400 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists in his career.

Last week, Hayes passed Devin Harris and Kirk Penney to move into the top 10 of Wisconsin's all-time scoring list. With 1,458 career points, Hayes is now tied for ninth overall in school annals with former teammate and National Player of the Year honoree Frank Kaminsky.

Named to national player of the year watch lists for the Naismith, Wooden and Lute Olsen awards, Hayes was named Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year after he finished 2016 as a First-Team All-Big Ten selection.

Hayes and the Badgers host Idaho State on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. CT game at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin also travels to Milwaukee on Saturday to face in-state rival Marquette at 1 p.m.
