Badgers have record-breaking night in 103-61 win

MADISON, Wis-- The Wisconsin women's basketball team bounced back just two days after a loss on its home turf, storming to a 103-61 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Thursday night at the Kohl Center. Every Badger that saw time on the court scored a basket and five players notched double-figure points, helping UW to its second 100-plus point game of the season.

The last time the Badgers put up more than 100 points in multiple games of a season was 1993.

"I'm really proud of our team's response. You all know that Tuesday night was not our best performance and that part of moving forward started really quickly after the game.

"When you look at the final box score, a team effort is something that shows when you have 28 assists. When you see that part of what I think is our strength on the glass. Just the balance, to have five people in double figures, to be able to keep everybody under 27 minutes, I really felt like when we subbed today there wasn't any part of things where it ever let down. Just really proud of our group for understanding the maturation of not allowing what happened Tuesday night to affect any part of what happened today."

The Badgers (4-7) shot 59 percent from the field, as well as going 9-for-18 in triples, while MVSU (2-5) shot just 30 percent.

Rookie Suzanne Gilreath recorded a career-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the arc, both career bests as well.

"Whenever my teammates give it to me, I'm ready to shoot. But I give props to my teammates for giving it to me because without them I wouldn't be able to do this so it's just about being ready when it comes," Gilreath said.

Redshirt junior Malayna Johnson also tallied a career high in her first career start, scoring 18 points, while senior Kendall Shaw set a UW career high with 12 points. Junior Cayla McMorris and freshman Abby Laszewski rounded out the double-figure scoring, tallying 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Freshman Kendra Van Leeuwen recorded six steals, just two short of the all-time freshman record for single-game steals.

Wisconsin opened up the game with consistent shooting, taking a 30-21 lead on the Devilettes after shooting 13-for-21 from the floor and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

The teams battled to six ties before a Gilreath three lifted the Badgers for good, 22-19, with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter. Wisconsin pulled away on an 8-2 run, ending the quarter with a 30-21 advantage.

The Wisconsin defense held the Devilettes to scoring just three points in the second quarter, taking a 53-24 lead at the half. The Badgers shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half and made 60 percent of their 3-point attempts.

MVSU rebounded with a 20-point performance in the third quarter, outscoring the Badgers 12-10 to start the second half and closing the gap to 65-36 at the media timeout. Wisconsin responded with a 9-1 surge, leading 74-37 with 2:34 remaining, before the Devilettes outscored UW 7-3 to close out the frame trailing 77-44.

Redshirt senior Taylor Kuhn opened the final period in style, scoring her first career basket to jumpstart a 13-5 run, giving Wisconsin an 89-49 advantage with just over half of the quarter to play. A triple from junior Lexy Richardson broke the century mark with 55 seconds to play, then Laszewski tacked on two free throws to seal the 103-61 win.

Wisconsin returns to Kohl Center action on Sunday, hosting Marquette at 1 p.m., then travels to Green Bay on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
