Ferrell shares tournament crown at Westbrook Invite

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Wisconsin women's golf team wrapped up the fifth-annual 54-hole Westbrook Spring Invitational on Monday at the par-72, 6,269-yard Westbrook Vistas Golf Course, tying a single-round season-best (290) and finishing 10th, as Brooke Ferrell tied for first on the player leaderboard.
The junior (71-71-69=211) entered the day tied for seventh at 2-under, but recorded a 3-under 69 in the third round to climb the standings. She set a new 54-hole school record and finished at 5-under tyingthe 54-hole scorecard of San Diego State's Emma Henrikson (69-73-79=211). The pair were declared co-medalists.
Ferrell's first-place finish tied her best collegiate finish, as she also ended in a knot at the top of the leaderboard at the Cardinal Cup, Oct. 19-20. Her three-round score of 211 marked a new career low, trumping her previous best of 213.
The Badgers (293-291-290=874) went for a 2-over 290 in Round 3, putting them at 10-over for the two-day event.
Oregon (285-282-287=854) easily took the tournament crown, going 10-under which was five strokes better than second-place Ohio State (-5, 287-288-284=859). The Ducks' total was the fourth-best performance in the tournament's five-year history.
Kansas State (289-284-288) placed third at a 3-under 861, while UNLV (-1, 285-288-290=863) and SMU (E, 291-291-282=864) rounded out the top five at fourth and fifth, respectively.
Behind Ferrell, Michelle Cheung (71-72-73) was UW's second-best golfer, as she tied for 18th at an even 216. Her 54-hole output tied a career best which she registered at the Windy City Collegiate Championship, Oct. 5-6.
Gabby Curtis ( 8, 75-73-76=224) followed Cheung, netting a 76 on Monday and placing tied-for-56th.
Tying for 63rd, freshman Nat Zeng (76-75-74) improved each round of the Westbrook Spring Invitational, culminating in a 2-over 74 on Day 3. Her 9-over 225 tied a career low.
Freshman Jessica Reinecke (78-78-74) scored a 230 in three rounds which was four shots better than her previous best. She finished at 14-over to place tied-for-77th.
UW's individual participants, Becky Klongland ( 6, 74-72-76) and Ali Nageotte ( 13, 78-76-75), registered 54-hole totals of 222 and 229, respectively. Klongland tied for 48th and Nageotte finished in a tie for 74th.
The Badgers return to the links, March 21-22, for the Briar's Creek Invitational at Briar's Creek Golf Course in John's Island, South Carolina.
