Tampa, Fla. --Â A career-best five RBI from junior
Chloe Miller off of two singles and a two-run home run pushed the Wisconsin softball team past the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, 6-3, in the final game of the USF Under Armour Classic on Sunday morning.
Â
"Always getting a win in the last game before you travel is a big deal," head coach
Yvette Healy said. "I think it showed a lot of fight and composure from our team. To leave the weekend, split with South Florida and split with UNLV, we are pretty happy about that.
Â
"You get those two splits plus playing against Kansas in a really tough game that you lose in just a heartbreaking way at the end, it shows a lot of toughness and leadership from our team. Coming off of a really hard day one, that we were able to win two of the next three, go out with a little bit of momentum, it just says a lot about the experience that we are starting to earn from our team and the fight from the kids."
Â
Kelsey Jenkins got things started for Wisconsin (7-7) as she reached first base on an error and was able to advance to second on the throw.
Chloe Miller followed with the first hit of the game, with a single to the right, allowing for Jenkins to score and giving the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the second inning,
Kelly Welsh singled to center and preceded to steal second base before
Taylor-Paige Stewart hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing Welsh to third base.
Samantha Arents then singled to first base allowing Welsh to score for UW making it a 2-0 game.
Ashley Van Zeeland followed with a single to shortstop, which allowed for
McKenna Heim, who pinch ran for Arents, to move to second. Jenkins walked before Miller shot in a single allowing Heim to score furthering the Badgers lead 3-0 at the end of the second inning.
Â
It was not until the third inning that UNLV (8-8) could respond. The Rebels' Jadelyn Yado-Valdez hit a single and then stole second base. The next batter then homered allowing for both Rebels to score making it a 3-2 game in UW's favor.
Â
In the fifth inning, Van Zeeland walked and was able to advance to second on a wild pitch. Miller then blasted her third home run of the season, allowing for her and Van Zeeland to score bringing the score to 6-2. The Badgers are already just two below their home run total (11) from the 2014-15 season with nine long shots in 14 games.
Â
UNLV responded in the bottom of the fifth when Yado-Valdez hit a single and then stole second base again. The next two batters respectively grounded out and hit a single but it ultimately allowed for Yado-Valdez to score making the final score, 6-3, as neither team was able to score during the sixth or seventh innings.
Â
Chloe Miller led the Badgers offensively as she had three hits for one home run and five RBIs.
Samantha Arents followed with one hit and one RBI.
Â
"
Chloe Miller was really swinging the bat so that was fun to see her in a groove," Healy added. "
Ashley Van Zeeland had a great weekend moving into the leadoff spot, she was really on fire. I think that was a great positional move. Coach Schneider did a really good job of working with the lineup and strategizing it. Working with the team and putting the right kids in at the right time, he was making all of the rights moves to put the kids in the best position possible."
Â
The win went to
Taylor-Paige Stewart who moved to 4-4 this season as she allowed seven hits and three runs in the contest. She struck out three and walked two batters.
Â
Up next for Wisconsin, the Badgers will travel to the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California, next weekend for a five-game slate where they will face California State, Arizona State, Oregon State, Fresno State and Long Beach State.
