Badgers strike it rich on first day in Rebel Classic

Wisconsin opens Las Vegas tournament with 8-0 win

LAS VEGAS - Wisconsin opened up its run in the Rebel Classic with an 8-0 victory over Santa Clara University. Dominant hitting from the Badgers led them to outhit the Broncos 12-4 with Ashley Van Zeeland, Kelsey Jenkins and Sara Novak accounting for three hits apiece.

The Badgers (10-9) came out of the gate firing, putting up one run and three hits in the bottom of the first frame. Van Zeeland led off with a single to left field and was followed in suit by Jenkins who sliced a shot to left. Junior Chloe Miller flied out to left field but her fellow junior Sara Novak blasted a hit to right field that brought in Van Zeeland and gave UW a 1-0 lead.

The Wisconsin defense took care of the next inning, retiring the Santa Clara (5-14) lineup in order in the top of the second inning and forcing the Broncos to leave one runner on base off of one hit in the top of the third.

The Badger bats started firing again in the bottom of the third in similar fashion to the first frame. Van Zeeland singled up the middle and was moved to second after Jenkins was walked, her 17th walk of the season. Novak once again brought the score up, singling through the left side and notching an RBI. Sophomore Samantha Arents popped up an infield double that allowed to Jenkins to score unearned and give the Badgers a 3-0 advantage off of the two runs and three hits in the third frame.

The Broncos started the fourth inning with back-to-back singles but Santa Clara saw their hopes of a rally dashed by a wild triple play. With runners on second and third, SCU's Justine Garner lined out to left field and then Gabby Scherle connected with Kelsey Jenkins to run down the runner headed to third from second base. The Broncos' leadoff runner on third was called out for leaving the base too early and just like that the Badgers escaped the fourth inning. The Broncos would only register one more hit in the game off of leadoff single in the top of the fifth inning.

But Wisconsin was far from done.

Three doubles in the fifth inning from Jenkins, Novak and Arents produced two more Wisconsin runs for a 5-0 lead headed into the sixth inning.

The Broncos couldn't manage to get anything going in the top of the sixth, going out on two groundouts and a pop up which led into an explosive end for UW.

With one out on the board, freshman Kelly Welsh was walked and junior Taylor Berry was hit by the pitch to put runners on first and second for Van Zeeland. Van Zeeland shot a hit through the middle, making it her third hit in four times at the plate, and loading the bases up Jenkins.

Jenkins smashed a single to center field to score Welsh and keep the bases loaded up for Miller. Miller took advantage just as Jenkins did and put a single in nearly the exact same spot in center field, running up the score 7-0. Novak sealed the deal for Wisconsin with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Van Zeeland and finish the inning with three runs off of three hits for the Badgers and a final score of 8-0.

Senior Taylor-Paige Stewart had a steady performance in the circle, pitching six inning and allowing just four hits and no runs. It marks the seventh shutout of her career and her first of the season. She walked two batters and struck out three in the lopsided victory.

Van Zeeland and Jenkins tied their career highs with three hits each, while Novak set a new career best with her three hits in the game.

Arents tied her season high with two hits, both were doubles which marked the second time in her career that she hit two doubles in a single game.

The Badgers also racked up four doubles in a single game for the first time since April 14, 2015 against Green Bay.

Wisconsin is back in action Saturday against Valparaiso at 5:45 p.m. (CT) and tournament-host UNLV at 8 p.m. (CT).
