Junior will compete in the pentathlon on Friday
MADISON, Wis. – After representing Canada numerous times on the international stage, Wisconsin women's track and field junior Georgia Ellenwood will represent her native country on one of the biggest track stages as she was selected to compete in the pentathlon at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships this weekend in Portland, Oregon.
Ellenwood has had a tremendous indoor season, setting the school record in the pentathlon at the Big Ten indoor championships with a score of 4,392 points en route to a runner-up finish. Her score is the best by a Canadian this indoor season and ranks 19th in the World.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Georgia," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "This comes at a great time for her after earning first-team All-America honors last weekend at the NCAA indoor meet. Every athlete wants to represent their country on the international stage. The IAAF World Indoor Championships will take place on U.S. soil for the first time, which is great to grow the sport.
"It will be four days of world class competition and an awesome experience for Georgia."
Ellenwood earned first-team All-America honors in the pentathlon for a second-straight year, as she finished fourth at last week's NCAA meet with a score of 4,390 points. She also set personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles, shot put and long jump at the NCAA indoor championships.
The 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships will be held in Portland, Oregon, at the Oregon Convention Center, Thursday through Sunday.
Last summer, Ellenwood concluded her sophomore season with a fifth-place showing for Canada in the heptathlon at the World University Games. In 2014, Ellenwood took seventh in the heptathlon at the IAAF World Junior Championships while taking third at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships.
