Wisconsin duo look to repeat as first-team All-America selections
MADISON, Wis. – After breaking school records this indoor season, the Wisconsin women's track and field duo of Kelsey Card and Georgia Ellenwood qualified for the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships, March 11-12, at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, the association announced late Tuesday night.
It marks the second-straight year Card and Ellenwood will compete at the NCAA indoor meet, as they both earned first-team All-America nods last year.
Card, a five-time Big Ten champion in the throws, will compete in the weight throw at 7:20 p.m. CT on March 11, as the senior enters the competition as the top seed in the event. At the 2016 Big Ten Indoor Championships last weekend, Card broke her own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 72 feet, 7 3/4 inches, which ranks eighth in the world this year.
Card will also compete in the shot put at 5 p.m. on March 12. She is ranked third in the NCAA in the event with a season-best mark of 58-6 3/4.
Recently named the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for a second-straight year, Card is one of only two women competing in both throwing events at the national meet.
Card earned first-team All-America honors in the shot put at last year's NCAA indoor meet with a fourth-place showing and collected second-team All-America accolades in the weight throw.Â
Ellenwood, the Big Ten runner-up in the pentathlon, enters the pentathlon at the NCAA meet as the No. 5 seed with a school-record score of 4,392 points. She set personal-bests in four of the five pentathlon events at the Big Ten meet and her score ranks second in Big Ten history.
At last year's NCAA meet, Ellenwood took home first-team All-America honors with an eighth-place showing.
The pentathlon is set to start at 12:15 p.m. on March 11.
This marks the first year the NCAA Division I indoor meet will be at the CrossPlex in Birmingham after the venue hosted a pair of NCAA Division II National Championships.
The two-day NCAA championships begin on March 11 with the 60 meters of the men's heptathlon at noon. The men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles kick start the meet on March 12 at noon.Â
