SAN DIEGO – The Wisconsin women's track and field team enjoyed a stellar showing in the distance events at the Aztec Invitational on Friday, placing the top six runners in the 5000 meters.
Leading the charge in the 5000 meters was senior
Gabi Anzalone, who won the race in 16 minutes, 37.98 seconds. Redshirt freshman
Shaelyn Sorensen was second in 16:39.50, sophomore
Jamie Shannon was third in 16:48.91 while junior
Michele Lee was fourth in 16:53.13. Freshman
Amy Davis was fifth in 17:04.91 while sophomore
Sarah Heinemann was sixth in 17:17.83.
In the invitational section of the hammer throw, fifth-year senior
Kelsey Card was third with a toss of 189 feet, 6 inches, which ranks third in program history. Freshman
Haley Showalter, in her debut for Wisconsin, was fourth with a throw of 186-5. Showalter's mark ranks fourth in UW annals.
Redshirt freshman
Kennedy Blahnik was 10th in the invitational section of the hammer throw with a toss of 156-8.
In the pole vault, sophomore
Taylor Amann tied for sixth with a clearance of 13-0 1/4.
Junior
Brenna Detra won the open 800 meters in 2 minutes, 14.11 seconds, which was a personal-best time.
Freshman
Emma Haugen tied for second in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 3 inches.
Sophomore
Casie Pawlik finished fifth in the heptathlon with a score of 4,184 points. Pawlik started the second day of the heptathlon with a mark of 16-2 ½ in the long jump, which ranked third, before throwing the javelin 86-5.
Pawlik ran a time of 2:36.45 in the 800 meters to wrap up the seven-discipline event.
The final day of the Aztec Invitational starts up on Saturday at noon CT with the women's discus.
