Wisconsin shuts out No. 21 Fresno State, 4-0

Badgers defeat second ranked opponent this season

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Coming back from a two-hour break after falling to No. 22 Oregon State University, 3-1, in the afternoon, Wisconsin (9-9) turned things around in the evening upsetting No. 21 Fresno State with a 4-0 shutout in the second day of the Judi Garman Classic.

"This might be one of the first times that we shut out a top-25 team," head coach Yvette Healy said. "To put a zero on the board, against an offense like Fresno State, it's pretty amazing. They are an outstanding ball club, we've gotten to watch them play a lot this weekend.

"I give our team a lot of credit for just sticking with it. We have been playing some good softball. We haven't gotten all of the wins but the defense is coming along, the hitting, the pitching and to see it all come together in one game is really, really neat."

The Badgers returned to the Anderson Family Field in the evening to take on No. 21 Fresno State (13-5) for their second night game this weekend and of the season.

The first three innings were scoreless against Fresno State with the Badgers seeing only two hits by Chloe Miller and Melanie Cross in the first and second innings, respectively.

The Badgers turned up the heat in the bottom of the fourth inning, collecting three runs off of three hits. Miller shot a single through center field while Sara Novak followed with a walk advancing Miller to second. Samantha Arents reached on an error allowing Miller to score and Novak to make it to third.

With a 1-0 lead, Brianna Flugaur bunted for a single, advancing Arents to second while Novak remained on third. With bases loaded, Melanie Cross then stepped up to hit sending it to left field and bringing Novak in to score.

Off of a bunt, Kelly Welsh reached on a fielder's choice while Arents got out at home plate. Then on a wild pitch, Flugaur scored the Badgers' third run of the inning. The Badgers ended the fourth inning with three runs, three hits, one error and two left on base.

The Bulldogs tried to respond in the fifth inning earning two hits and with another hit in the sixth inning but it was not enough.

The Badgers were not finished yet as Arents stepped up as the first batter for UW hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning to ultimately win the game, 4-0.

Wisconsin out-hit Fresno State 6-4 with Sam Arents leading the team with one run, one hit and one RBI.

Kirsten Stevens started off pitching for the Badgers. Stevens went five innings only allowing for three hits with no runs earning the win to move to 4-4 this season. Taylor-Paige Stewart finished the last two innings of the game only allowing for one hit with zero runs.

"I think it really starts with Taylor-Paige Stewart as a senior combo pitching with Kirsten Stevens," Healy added. "They are two very selfless pitchers. The fact that they don't really care who gets the win and are just in it for the Badgers really shows and that leadership really came through today."

In the afternoon game against No. 22 Oregon State University (15-4) the third inning saw all of the action in the 3-1 Badger loss.

After a scoreless two innings, OSU's Shelby Weeks stepped up first to bat in the third inning sending the ball to the left field making it to first base and proceeded to steal second base. Then on a single hit to the right field, Weeks made a run for it to score for Oregon State.

With one Beaver on first, OSU's Lovie Lopez hit a home run adding an additional two runs to Oregon State's score. At the end of the top of the inning, OSU had three runs, three hits, zero errors and zero left on base.

Then in the bottom of the third, Wisconsin responded to OSU's 3-0 lead. Gabby Scherle was first to step up for the Badgers hitting a bunt to the pitcher allowing her to make it to first base. Scherle then stole second base before Kelsey Jenkins hit a single to third base.

Then on a double play both Jenkins and Scherle respectively stole second and third bases. Miller then fouled out to the left field making it possible for Scherle to score for Wisconsin. Melanie Cross got a walk before the Badgers ended the third inning with one run, two hits, zero errors and two left on base.

In the fourth inning, OSU's Alysha Everett hit a triple capitalizing off of a dropped ball but the Badgers shut down the Beavers before they could take advantage of the play. Wisconsin did the same thing to Jessica Garcia's double hit in the fifth inning, stumping the Beavers from making a move.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wisconsin came out hungry for revenge. Up first was Scherle who singled through the left field.  Ashley Van Zeeland followed suit with a single of her own, allowing Scherle to advance to second base. The Badgers were unable to capitalize on their momentum ending the fifth inning with zero runs, two hits, zero errors and one left on base, after Scherle was tagged out on a play.

Wisconsin was unable to come back from the two-run deficit going scoreless and hitless in the last two innings. Oregon State saw one more hit in the top of seventh but ultimately won, 3-1, against Wisconsin.

The Badgers were outhit 6-4 with Gabby Scherle leading the team with one run and two hits.

Taylor-Paige Stewart started pitching for the Badgers against OSU, completing 4.2 innings allowing for three runs and five hits. Kirsten Stevens filled in for Stewart pitching 2.1 innings allowing only one hit.

Wisconsin will compete tomorrow in Long Beach, California, against Long Beach State at 11 a.m. (CT) wrapping up the Badgers' California trip.
