MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's golf team completed its regular season at the Silverado Showdown, April 3-5, but will return to the links this weekend at the 2016 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships.
The conference tournament takes place April 22-24 at the par 72, 6,221-yard The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis.
UW's six-person squad includes: Michelle Cheung, Gabby Curtis, Brooke Ferrell, Becky Klongland, Jessica Reinecke and Nat Zeng.
Ferrell has been Wisconsin's top performer all season. She leads the team in numerous categories including, scoring average (73.61), lowest 18- (66), 36- (140) and 54-hole (211) scorecards, under-par rounds (six), 18-hole outputs in the 60s (three), top-25 placements (five) and best finish (T1, twice).
The junior's scoring average currently ranks first in school history, trumping the next-best total by 0.72 strokes which Malinda Johnson earned during her senior campaign in 2002-04.
Cheung leads the Badgers with 25.33 rounds out of 26 total to be counted toward Wisconsin's team score at tournaments this season.
To explain, schools enter six team golfers for events and only the top five scores are counted in every 18-hole round. When three competitors, for example, have identical 18-hole scores which rank fifth-best on the squad, just one of their scores counts toward the team score. Those three golfers then each receive one-third of a counted round in their individual statistics.
So, Cheung has ranked among the top five Wisconsin golfers in every round this season. She has tied with two others for the fifth-best score in one round which explains why her counted rounds equal 25.33, not 26.
Curtis has the second-best finish this year, as she tied for ninth at the East-West Match Play Challenge, Sept. 20-22. The placement matches the highest of her career which she previously picked up at the 2015 UCF Challenge.
Klongland's posted her most impressive performance of the year at the East-West Match Play Challenge, as she tied for 16th with a 4-over 148. The sophomore recorded 18- (72), 36- (146) and 54-hole (222) career-bests at the Westbrook Spring Invitational, Feb. 21-22.
Entering the conference tournament, Reinecke posts a scoring average of 77.36 strokes per round, with her lowest 18-hole output (72) of the year coming in the first round of the UCF Challenge on Feb. 7.
Nat Zeng has been Wisconsin's top freshman golfer. She ranks fourth on the team in scoring average (75.90). Currently, Zeng's 18-hole average ranks as the second-best for a first-year golfer in UW history, behind Ferrell and ahead of Curtis. The Thailand native earned her best finish at the Cardinal Cup, Oct. 19-20, placing tied-for-29th with a 12-over 228.
Last season, Wisconsin placed sixth at the conference tournament, marking the third-straight year that the team ranked at No. 6. UW went for a 31-over 295-298-302=895.
Four current Badgers golfers (Cheung, Curtis, Ferrell, Klongland) have Big Ten Championships experience. Curtis was the squad's top finisher in 2015, as she tied for 13th with a 4-over 220.
