Sophomore makes outdoor debut for Wisconsin at Stanford Twilight

STANFORD, Calif. – In his first race of the 2016 outdoor season, 2015 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Joe Hardy didn't disappoint with a third-place finish in the 5000 meters at the Stanford Twilight on Friday night.

The 2015 Big Ten champion in the 1500 meters, Hardy crossed the line in 14 minutes, 0.81 seconds, a personal-best time for the Seattle native.

Hardy's time ranks eighth in the Big Ten Conference this season and 25th in the NCAA West Region.

Down the California coast, senior Charlie Foss led the Badgers at the Triton Invitational, hosted by the University of California, San Diego, setting a personal best in the pole vault.

A multi-event athlete, Foss cleared 14 feet, 11 inches, to place seventh in the open section of the vault.

Foss, along with redshirt freshman Trent Nytes and sophomores Josh McDonald and Riley Budde, will compete in the final day of the Triton Invitational on Saturday. The Badgers will also have a group of sprinters run in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the John McDonnell Invitational on Saturday
