Rigsby backstops U.S. to World Championship gold

Nine Badgers competed in overtime gold-medal contest
KAMLOOPS, B.C.-- Former Wisconsin women's hockey standout Alex Rigsby posted her second shutout of the IIHF Women's World Championships on Monday night, saving all 32 shots she faced to help the U.S. Women's National Team win its third-straight title in a 1-0 overtime thriller against Canada.
Rigsby's teammate and former Badger Hilary Knight was named the tournament's best forward, leading all players in scoring with seven goals and two assists in five games.
Canada and the United States battled through three scoreless periods, forcing extra time in the gold-medal matchup. Just over 12 minutes into the extra frame, Boston College standout Alex Carpenter knocked in the loose puck during a scramble in front of the Canadian net to seal the U.S. victory.
A total of nine Badgers represented their respective countries at the World Championships. Emily Clark, Meaghan Mikkelson and Blayre Turnbull skated for Canada, while Rigsby, Knight, Brianna Decker, Meghan Duggan, Annie Pankowski, and Jessie Vetter suited up for the U.S.
