Live Stream
MADISON, Wis. – Fresh off a second-place finish at the 2016 Big Ten Championships, the No. 11 Wisconsin women's rowing team earned an at-large bid to the 22-school field for the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championships. The event, which will take place on Lake Natoma in Gold River, California, runs May 27-29.
The Badgers earned one of 11 at-large bids to the championships, joining 11 schools that earned automatic bids by capturing conference championships.
Wisconsin placed second at the 2016 Big Ten Championships last Sunday by claiming third in the varsity eight, and second in the second varsity eight and varsity four races. UW also won titles in the novice eight and second novice eight events.
UW's team finish marked its best result since the team won the 2010 Big Ten Championships.
Wisconsin returns to the NCAAs for the ninth consecutive season, the 11th time in 12 seasons under head coach Bebe Bryans and for the 13th time since NCAA rowing began in 1997.
The Badgers, who placed 13th as a team at the 2015 NCAA Championships, produced a program-best, seventh-place NCAA finish at the 2010 event.
Wisconsin earned the No. 11 seed in the varsity eight, the No. 9 seed in the second varsity eight and the No. 8 seed for the varsity four for the 2016 NCAAs.
UW's varsity eight will open as the No. 11 seed in an intriguing Heat 3. The Badgers will see Big Ten-champion Ohio State, along with Brown, Duke, UCF and Jacksonville. Duke is led by first-year head coach Megan Cooke-Carcagno, who was one of Wisconsin's assistant coaches prior to taking over the Blue Devils' program, while first-year UW assistant coach Jim Mitchell is the former head coach at Jacksonville.
The top two from each of the four heats advance to the A-B semifinals, while the remaining crews will race again in one of two repechages. The top two in each repechage will then advance to the A-B semifinals, with the rest of the crews dropping into the C-D semifinals.
In the second varsity eight, ninth-seeded UW will race top-seeded Brown, Stanford, Syracuse and Southern California in Heat 1.
The eight-seeded varsity four will race top-seeded California, Stanford, Indiana and Gonzaga in its Heat 1.
Progressions are the same in the second varsity eight and varsity four as in the aforementioned varsity eight.
Wisconsin joins three-time defending NCAA champion Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana to give the Big Ten four schools in the NCAA field for 2016.
