Varsity eight trailblazes way for team’s top-10 NCAA finish
The Badgers enjoyed success across a number of sports in 2015-16, so UWBadgers.com is honoring the student-athletes, teams, performances and moments that made for another special season at Wisconsin. Over the span of a few weeks, we'll unveil the best of the Badgers in five categories: Big Ten Medal of Honor (June 14-17), Athlete of the Year (June 20-24), Team of the Year (June 27-July 2), Game of the Year (July 5-11) and Moment of the Year (July 12-20). Today, we highlight Team of the Year nominee women's hockey.

July 2: Women's Rowing
MADISON, Wis. — While the women's rowing team knew it themselves, the signs to the outside world were there from the very first race of the spring. It was going to be a good year.
The Badgers lined up at the San Diego Crew Classic and posted the fastest time of the day in their first varsity eight race of the season. That included No. 2 and eventual NCAA-champion California, among two more schools ranked ahead of the No. 13 Badgers.
Wisconsin would show strength again two weeks later against No. 1 Brown in close varsity eight and second varsity eight defeats. The Badgers would cruise to a win in the varsity four.
The team swept through its Big Ten competition, as well as the rest of its opponents and put up its best showing at the Big Ten championships since 2010, taking second place behind three-time NCAA and Big Ten champion Ohio State. Along the way, Wisconsin's novice eight and second novice eight crews capped undefeated seasons with Big Ten titles.
The results helped head coach Bebe Bryans earn Big Ten Coach of the Year honors and Alicia Evans recognition as the Big Ten's Co-Freshman of the Year. Seniors Gilian Cooper (first team) and Hannah Schwartz (second team) were placed on All-Big Ten teams.
An NCAA bid secured, the Badgers looked for more. With the program's first top-10 finish since 2011, the team took ninth, and matched the program's best NCAA finish in the varsity eight with a ninth-place result.
Post-season accolades rolled in, including Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) second-team All-America honors for seniors Gilian Cooper and Hannah Schwartz. Those honors made Schwartz the first two-time All-American in the NCAA era (1997 to present) for Wisconsin.
Cooper and Schwartz were also named CRCA first-team All-Region picks, while fellow senior Briana Dahm made the second team.
Already Big Ten Coach of the Year, Bryans was joined by her staff of Nancy LaRocque and Jim Mitchell and the CRCA Regional Staff of the Year.
