RIO DE JANIERO — Former Wisconsin distance standout Mohammed Ahmed opened his second Olympics appearance Saturday, racing in the 10,000 meters.
Competing for his native Canada, Ahmed clocked in at 29 minutes, 32.84 seconds to finish 32nd overall.
Ahmed also will run in the first round of the 5000 meters on Wednesday.
Great Britain's Mo Farah repeated as the Olympic champion in the 10,000 by racing to the win in 27:05.17. Paul Kipngetich Tanui of Kenya claimed the silver medal in 27:05.64, with Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia taking the bronze in 27:06.26.
"I don't know what happened, I thought I was ready for it," Ahmed said. "I think I did a little too much surging at the beginning; with eight laps to go my legs just couldn't sustain it."
The Canadian record-holder at 13:01.74, Ahmed was 12th in the 5000 meters at the 2015 IAAF World Championships and also won gold in the 10,000 at the 2015 Pan American Games. He finished 18th in the 10,000 meters in his Olympic debut in London in 2012.
Ahmed was a five-time All-American and four-time Big Ten champion during his collegiate career at UW.
The opening round of the 5000 meters is set for 8:05 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday in Rio.
"Once I fell off I just tried to make it as a cool down," Ahmed said of saving energy for the 5000. "I wanted this one, I wanted to be with those guys, and I was pretty much just watching the last six to seven laps."
