MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin women's rowing team started off its fall season with a strong showing on Saturday at the Milwaukee River Challenge.

UW took the top spot in both the women's four and women's eight competition with three boats finishing in the top five in both competitions, which made it a successful day according to assistant coach Jim Mitchell.

"All of our women represented our program well and we started off the 2016-17 racing season in a great way," Mitchell said. "They represented Wisconsin in a great way in front of a lot of UW fans and alumni in Milwaukee, so overall it was a very good day."

In the open four, Wisconsin B boat, coxed by Nicola Levy, earned the top spot with a time of 18:43:07 for three miles, beating out second-place Purdue by just under 16 seconds. Lincoln Park Boat Club rounded out the top-three.

Fourth through seventh place consisted of all UW boats with the Wisconsin D boat missing out on the podium by just under one second. The fastest lightweight boat for UW finished in sixth place with a time of 19:14:54.

In the open eight, Wisconsin boats earned the top two spots, with the Wisconsin C boat finishing with a time of 17:08:81 over three miles. The second-place Wisconsin A boat finished about nine seconds behind with a time of 17:17:65.

Lincoln Park Boat Club rounded out the top-three with a time of 17:24:91.

Three more boats finished in the top-seven with Wisconsin B finishing in fifth, Wisconsin D in sixth and Wisconsin E in seventh. 

"It was a fun day for the freshman since it was their first day racing as Badgers," lightweight head coach Dusty Mattison said. "They did a good job of coming together, finding a rhythm together so it was a big day all around."

The next competition for the openweight team will take place Oct. 8 when they face Indiana and Iowa in Bloomington, Indiana for a scrimmage. The next races that will feature both the openweight and lightweight teams will take place on Oct. 9 when they will compete in the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Illinois.
