BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team dropped its second game in conference play on Sunday afternoon at the hands of Indiana, 3-2.
Â
"I thought Indiana had a really good game plan and we had trouble breaking it down at the very beginning," head coach
Paula Wilkins said. "They're very good and we knew that coming into the game and I don't think we did a good job of doing what we needed to do in crucial moments. The game of soccer really comes down to those moments."
Â
The Hoosiers' (5-6-1 overall, 2-2-0 Big Ten) game-winning goal came in the 78th minute as Cassidy Blancha was able to knock in the score on a corner kick after the ball ricocheted off of a Wisconsin (4-4-1, 1-2-1) player standing in the goal box.
Â
The Badgers were the first to get on the scoreboard in the seventh minute as sophomore
Emily Borgmann notched her third goal of the season off of the throw-in assisted by junior
Alexis Tye (her first this season) and senior
Micaela Powers.
Â
However, Indiana's Allison Jorden was able to punch in the equalizer in the 21st minute on a header off of a free kick to tie things up, 1-1.
Â
The momentum kept swinging in IU's favor heading into halftime as Kylie Kirk netted a goal in the 30th minute giving Indiana the upper hand, 2-1.
Â
Despite being down, the Wisconsin squad came out firing in the second half with senior
Rose Lavelle rocketing in the equalizer from the top of the 18-yard box in the 50th minute of action from an assist by sophomore
Steph Fabry, her first assist this season and Lavelle's second goal this season.
Â
The Badgers kept fighting in the second half, earning all three of their corner kicks in the second period, but were unable to overcome Blancha's game-winning goal that gave the Hoosiers the victory, 3-2.
Â
Indiana held the advantage in shots (16-8) and shots on goal (7-3) while both teams each tallied three corner kicks.
Â
Lavelle and Borgmann led the team in shots with three each while Lavelle, Borgmann, and Powers also steered the team in shots on goal with one each.
Â
Goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem recorded four saves on the day while Indiana's L'Hommedieu logged one.
Â
Indiana's three goals and 16 shots is the most the Badgers has given up this season, however the team garnered a season-high .250 shot percentage.Â
Â
"The Big Ten is not easy, we have to be better prepared," Wilkins said. "I talked to the team about that, even from a physical side and getting good sleep, we played two games in three days in the heat and conditions we play in, we have to be better about that. We got a little tired and got off our game plan a little bit so we have to get back to our disciplined ways."
Â
The Badgers hit the road the next weekend to take on Minnesota on Friday, Oct. 1. The game is set to begin at 5:30 pm.
