Battle in Boca Raton: Badgers and Owls tie 1-1

Guitar nets his first collegiate goal in draw

Sept. 4, 2016

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Wisconsin men's soccer team battled Florida Atlantic University to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

"It was great to see Mitch Guitar get his first collegiate goal," UW head coach John Trask said. "Great pass from Blake Carr, another one of our freshman. Deep down I think we are disappointed we didn't finish the job as a team today, the opportunity was there to win the game.

"If we would've been a little bit better in front of the goal and a little bit more complete, we should've been able to score another goal or two. Then we gave up a goal with a minute or two left. That's what happens when you let a team stay in it at 1-0."

The first goal of the Badger-Owl matchup came just three minutes after the starting whistle when Guitar, a true freshman, knifed through the FAU backline and slotted a well-placed ball into the left corner of the net.

It wasn't until the 88th minute of play that Owls forward Elijah McDonald received a lead ball and rocketed a shot into the corner that knotted the game at 1-1 and sent the game into overtime.

Although the Badger's dominated regular time with 9-3 shots on net, the Owls prevailed on shots against the Badgers in extra time 5-2. Wisconsin also led corner kicks 4-2.

"Blake (Carr) started the game and he had a very good performance," Trask added. "Mitch (Guitar) also started the game and played very well. We always hope one goal is enough to carry us but with tough conditions here in Florida against a Conference USA team that wouldn't go away, they were rewarded with their persistence."

Phillip Schilling got the start in net for the Badgers and collected three saves.

The Badgers are back in action under the lights at the McClimon Soccer Complex where they face off against Big Ten rival Michigan at 7:30 p.m. (CT). The game is a part of PAC the MAC.
