Badgers kicker named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week
MADISON, Wis. — On the heels of booting the fourth game-winning field goal of his career, Wisconsin junior kicker Rafael Gaglianone has been named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.
Gaglianone provided the winning margin in the Badgers' 16-14 win over fifth-ranked LSU in the Lambeau Field College Classic with a 47-yarder with 3:47 remaining. It was the third score of the game for the native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who went 3-for-3 on the day with makes from 30 and 48 yards.
The effort is a strong start for Gaglianone, who looks to return to the form that saw him convert 19 of 22 field goals as a freshman in 2014. Last season, Gaglianone went 18-for-27.
Though UW has had several punters and returners earn Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors in between, Gaglianone is the first UW kicker to claim a weekly award from the conference since All-American Taylor Mehlhaff earned the nod on Oct.30, 2006.
Gaglianone is wearing No. 27 this season as a tribute to his good friend, Nebraska punter Sam Foltz, who was killed in an auto accident in July.
