Sophomore forward recognized among nation’s best
MADISON, Wis. — The freshman phenom was no fluke.
Ethan Happ of the No. 15 Wisconsin men's basketball team is building an All-American campaign in his sophomore season, which was reinforced this week when the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named Happ to its Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List.
The forward from Milan, Illinois, was one of 19 outstanding players included on the list of contenders for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which recognizes the USBWA's National Player of the Year.
Balloting for the USBWA's All-America Team, All-District Teams and the association's individual awards will take place in March. The Oscar Robertson Trophy will be presented at a news conference on March 31 at the Final Four in Phoenix.
Monday marked an eventful day for Happ, as he also earned his first career Big Ten Player of the Week honor, sharing the weekly conference honor as Big Ten Co-Player of the Week with James Blackmon Jr. of Indiana.
Happ ranks third in the Big Ten with seven double-doubles this season. Arguably the most versatile player in the country, Happ is among the league leaders in a number of categories: tied for 16th in scoring (13.6 ppg), third in field goal percentage (.602), third in rebounding (9.2 rpg), third in steals (1.8 spg) and tied for 13th in blocks (1.1 bpg).
Happ is the only player in the NCAA averaging at least 13.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. In fact, Happ is trying to become the first major conference player in the last 20 seasons to reach those marks for an entire season. Vermont's Marqus Blakely (2010) is the only NCAA Division-I player to achieve those marks since 1996-97.
After a breakout freshman campaign garnered him Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Happ has been building a case to be an All-American in his sophomore season. Happ is on the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list, as well as a candidate for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award and the Naismith Player of the Year award.
Happ and the Badgers host Penn State at the Kohl Center on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. (CT) game on BTN. Wisconsin also travels to New York to face Rutgers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday at 11 a.m. as part of the "2017 Super Saturday – College Hoops & Hockey" doubleheader.
