MADISON, Wis. – Friday night's match will not be a normal matchup. It will be a rematch of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament Championship and it will be a game of revenge for the Wisconsin men's soccer team (7-2-3 overall, 3-1-1 Big Ten) as it takes on third-ranked Maryland (9-0-3, 4-0-2) in the last regular-season home game of the season.
In what was both the most exciting and gut-wrenching contest of the season, the Badgers fell 2-1 in the Big Ten Championship to Maryland. Tom Barlow had the lone goal for Wisconsin off of a lobbed ball through two defenders from Chris Mueller.
1. SENIOR DAY: Wisconsin will celebrate the illustrious careers of its seven seniors: Tom Barlow, Mike Catalano, Alex Masbruch, Chris Mueller, Adrian Remeniuk, Mark Segbers and Philipp Schilling. Among the seven they have 26 wins, seven preseason All-Big Ten honors, four Academic All-Big Ten honors, three Big Ten Player of the Week accolades, three All-Big Ten Freshmen team honorees, two All-Big Ten second team honorees and one first-team All-Big Ten, first-team Midwest All-Region and third-team NSCAA All-American. All seven played a role in helping the Badgers to become Big Ten regular-season and tournament runner-ups in 2016.
2. LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin dominated Marquette on its home turf, 3-0 on Wednesday. Tom Barlow, Chris Mueller and Elan Koenig each found the back of the net. It was Koenig's second game in a row scoring. Mueller extended a three-game scoring streak as he scored the lone goal against No. 1-ranked (RPI) Michigan State in UW's 1-1 draw on Saturday night. It was the first time Michigan State did not score first against a Big Ten opponent.
3. MUELLER THE MAGNIFICENT: Senior Chris Mueller leads the Big Ten conference in shots (51), shots per game (4.25), goals (6), goals per game (0.5), assists (10), assists per game (0.83), points (22) and points per game (1.83). He contributed to every goal the Badgers scored over the weekend with two goals and two assists tallying six points
4. SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS: Maryland is having another successful season, ranked second in the Soccer America and Top Drawer Soccer polls in addition to sporting a 9-0-3 record and 4-0-2 Big Ten mark. 5. WE'VE GOT HISTORY: This game will be a rematch of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament Championship. The Badgers have never beaten or tied against the Terrapins, trailing the all-time series 0-6-0.
