MADISON, Wis. – The No. 17 Badgers will compete against 32 teams from across the nation in the prestigious Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational presented by Under Armour on Friday.
The event will begin at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course with women's and men's "B" races at 11 a.m. and 11:40 a.m., respectively. The women's championship race starts at 12:20 p.m. and the men's championship race begins at 1 p.m. The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack and more information about the meet can be found here.
1. To Be or Nut to Be: Sixteen of the top-30 ranked teams in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's National Coaches' Poll will appear at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational including No. 3 New Mexico, No. 5 Stanford and No. 6 San Francisco. Four of last year's top five individual finishers are expected to compete at this year's race including last year's champion Brenna Peloquin of Boise State.
"It seems like every year we talk about the Nuttycombe Invitational, we talk about the incredible field that we've put together," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "When you look at having the top teams in the country coming here, anytime you've got that type of quality you expect your athletes, you expect the coaches to get excited this week.
"I can guarantee you as the coaching staff, we are all excited about putting on a good show this weekend"
2. Last year at the Nutty: At last year's Nuttycombe Invitational the Wisconsin women took 21st place led by sophomores Amy Davis who finished 72nd overall and Alicia Monson who followed in 77th. UW was without the services of standouts Sarah Disanza and Shaelyn Sorensen, who both missed the meet due to injuries.
3. Triple Threat The Badgers competed last week in Louisville, Kentucky at the Greater Louisville Classic; their first meet outside of the Midwest this season. Amy Davis, Sarah Disanza and Alicia Monson all placed in the top-20 and helped UW to a second-place finish. Davis and Monson have both had wins earlier this season as Davis won the IU Open while Monson won the Mayflower Day Open.Â
"We're very excited about where our women are at right now," Byrne said. "We have three or four women firing on all cylinders and looking really good heading into this weekend. Sarah and Shaelyn are healthy and Amy and Alicia are doing a great job up front.
"The exciting thing about our women's team is that we're pretty deep."
4. Rising Rankings Thanks to their second-place finish at the Greater Louisville Classic the Badgers are ranked 17th in this week's USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll. This makes UW the ninth-highest ranked team that will be competing at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday. Badgers also picked up a No. 3 ranking in the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region poll.
5. Prepping for the Big Ten:Â After a weekend off, the Badgers will return to competition in a familiar spot; Bloomington, Indiana. UW will return to Indiana for the second time this season to compete in the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 29.Â
