Callie at the Catch: Three days, three states and lots of racing
October 12, 2017 | Women's Rowing
From Wisconsin to Iowa to Illinois in a weekend
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- The summed up version of this past weekend: three days, three states and a lot of racing.
Varsity started things off Friday morning with practice and then hopped on the bus to head to Iowa. It was a rainy and humid day, but Iowa's hospitality was greatly appreciated as we, as well as Indiana, hung out in their boathouse to stay out of the rain before and after racing. We raced 2x3k headrace against Iowa and Indiana down the river in an S shaped course. This was a fun and challenging course as the wind shifted with every turn. After a long first day, we made it back to our hotel for dinner and fell asleep early and fast.
Saturday morning we got up and headed back to Iowa's boathouse for another rainy day for racing, but this time a shorter distance, 6x1k. We raced side by side down a straight 1k course on the river. These were quick and a good fight between each boat. Three hours later of being out on the water, we rowed back to their boathouse and de-rigged our boats to load on to the trailer. Soon after we got back on the bus and headed home to Wisconsin just in time to watch the football game at Nebraska.
We had a quick turn around Sunday morning as we hopped back on a bus and drove to Rockford, Illinois for the Head of the Rock Regatta. This time around we had the novices and lightweights with us. This race is exciting because we can race in many different boats from a single to an eight, race multiple times, and have the opportunity to have friendly competition with each other. But, the most exciting part is it was the novice's first race for Wisconsin and for most of them, their first race ever. They learned a lot, had fun and have a bright future ahead of them.
Monday rolled around and we were fortunate enough to have the entire day off. This was just what we needed after a busy weekend, a chance to recover and rest.
