Thursday night lights: Badgers knock off Illini

Rhodes scored the game’s only goal

MADISON, Wis. – As the Wisconsin women's soccer team began its nine-day, three-game road trip, it'd be nice to return home with three wins in the back pocket. The Badgers took a nice first step toward that goal Thursday evening, taking down the Illini 1-0.

The Badgers (10-3-2 overall, 4-2-2 Big Ten) took on Illinois in Champaign Thursday evening, looking to bounce back from their double-overtime tie to Indiana University.

After 85 minutes it appeared as though the game was headed in the same direction as Wisconsin's game versus Indiana. One minute later sophomore forward Dani Rhodes took matters into her own hands.

Taking a pass from teammate Lauren Rice, Rhodes pumped a shot past Illinois keeper Jaelyn Cunningham to break a 0-0 split in the 86th minute.

Rhodes' goal was her ninth of the season and came on her third shot of the game.

Wisconsin keeper Caitlyn Clem was untested in Thursday's match, ending with one save on one shot on goal. Illinois ended with four shots total, compared to Wisconsin's eight.

Maia Cella, Sammy Kleedtke and Victoria Pickett all contributed to Wisconsin's shot count.

Up next: The Badgers continue their road trip with Northwestern this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
