Callie at the Catch: A Family Affair

Creating a new tradition
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- As the mornings stay darker longer and weather gets colder, it makes it extra challenging to get out of our warm, cozy beds at 5 a.m. But the reward of getting to see our teammates, who are our second family, and witnessing the changing sky with all its colors makes it all worth it and gives us that extra push to get out of bed.
You may already know, but rowing is one of the most tasking and demanding sports there is. Luckily, when you have teammates who are also your best friends, it makes it easier and more fun to work hard. For our team, we go beyond the water and the boats. No matter where we are, either at home, in class, or anywhere else and no matter what year we are in, we are close knit and will always have each other's backs. Because of the atmosphere and bond we have, this year the senior class decided to mix things up a little bit and create a new tradition.
In the past, our team did the whole big sister-little sister thing between a varsity member and a novice. This was fun and actually helpful for both to learn from someone who has experience, but also learn from someone who has fresh eyes. Now we have decided to change from big sister and little sister to a little family. This means within our team, or our one big family, we have many little families. We will have our own family names that we come up with ourselves that will be passed down for generations. My family's name is probably the best, but cannot be revealed just quite yet! These families have a variety of women from different classes and soon the freshmen will be added on. As one of two seniors in my family, I am proud to say that I (designated myself) as Grandpa because grandpas are the coolest.
There is such a rich history and legacies that have already been established in Wisconsin rowing and this will only create a tradition that will represent them in a special way. Alumni will be able to keep up with Wisconsin Rowing as well as their family generations later.
That's all for now, make sure to stay tuned as we head up north for a scrimmage against Minnesota this Sunday and Happy Halloween!
