Callie at the Catch: Busy Badgers

Are you tough enough?
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- As October rolls around, we as a team have been elevating our standards both in the boat and in the classroom. We have had a lot of things happening this week, but luckily for us our time management has only improved because of it, which is a skill we are proud to have learned early in our lives. This week we have had Vo2 max testing, racing selections and the beginning of midterms are starting to appear.
Vo2 Max testing is a physiological and physical test on the erg with an addition to a mask, tube and machines. This is much like a step test where the wattage goes up every three minutes and we try to sustain that wattage for as long as we can until we reach failure. There are not many tests where the goal is to fail. But, most importantly we are able to see our maximum volume of oxygen we can process while in the anaerobic zone. So basically we can see how long we can withstand the most pain. It can be a great confidence booster to know how tough you actually are.
Racing selections have also been underway as we have a weekend full of racing. We will be in Iowa Friday and Saturday scrimmaging Iowa and Indiana and then to the Head of the Rock on Sunday. Travel team and boat lineups are in the workings of being set. This can be based on how we have been doing this season so far, our consistency, and of course our famous matrix. We had three matrices, which is three sets of two fours. We race six by one thousand meters making switches after each piece. This helps in determining who can make the boat the fastest and who can match the best with any lineup.
On top of all of that, midterms and papers have been piling up this week and for the following week. One of my teammates had four exams in two days while also having practice and other classes. I still do not know how she did it.
But with everything going on and the stress that comes with it, there is nothing a little sunrise cannot fix! It can calm you in minutes. These are the perks of being out on the water at 6 a.m. to witness the beauty and peacefulness of the sky.
