Callie at the Catch: Bucky Days
November 28, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Grueling competition comes down to the wire
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- Both the openweight and lightweight teams came together last week to push through one of the toughest, most grueling events of the year: Bucky Days. This consisted of a 6,000-meter test on the erg Tuesday afternoon, a one-minute erg test and a four-mile run Wednesday morning, and finished it up with a 2,000-meter erg Thursday afternoon. And yes, these were all as fast as you can go, no holding back.
Bucky Days has been a tradition ever since Head Coach Bebe Bryans started here at Wisconsin and it has turned into one intense, fun week of intra-squad racing. We have a point system for each piece depending on your finish time, and at the end of it all, we have a Bucky Days winner! However, to make it even more competitive, there is a weighted adjustment factor. This makes it fair for the lightweights who are extremely fast, but are only 130 pounds.
Renee Olley, a junior on the openweight team, went into the final event of Bucky Days leading the team by one point, with a couple of lightweights trying to close in. It would all come down to the 2k.
With the close race for Top three, Olley mentioned that, "Bucky Days is something that always makes me appreciate having a big team. There is nothing more exciting than lining up with an entire boathouse of lightweight and openweight freshmen and varsity for a run or a 2k."
And in the end Olley was crowned Bucky Days Champion.
"It's exciting and really brings the squads together through some healthy competition," Olley said.
The erg bays were electric and filled with great racing throughout each piece and heat. One of the hardest parts is recovering after each piece especially after the quick turnaround between the 6k Tuesday afternoon to an early morning one-minute test and four-mile run. Luckily, there was plenty of time for an ice bath in the lake, stretching, and mobility afterwards until the 2k Thursday afternoon.
Bucky Days is officially over and a nice holiday break is in store. I want to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all and hope that everyone eats a lot!
