Callie at the Catch: The Snowy Rows
November 03, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- As we drove up to Minneapolis for our last race/scrimmage of the fall season, we saw more and more snow on the ground the farther north we got. We kept checking the temperature and prayed we brought enough layers, as it was 28 degrees at the highest. I for one had four layers on top, two layers on bottom, two thick socks, and a headband to cover my ears and was still chilly in the wind and the splashes from bow.
Some girls on the team have never really experienced snow yet and most have never rowed in the snow, so they were in for an exciting and unforgettable day! But being a team from Wisconsin, most of us are used to this and are tough enough to handle most weather conditions. This is something that a lot of teams we compete against do not have to deal with or experience as rowers. It is what makes us tough, adaptable and will bring us a long way.
It was also a big day for our novice team because this was the first time they raced another team side by side. It can be intimidating and nerve-racking especially for the first time, but from what I could see, they held their own and looked determined.
Freshman Rachel Phinney mentioned "racing right next to other boats made it a lot more intense just because you knew where they were, but in the end you just had to get out and stay in front of them." She also thought this race gave her a lot of experience as the boat got better and better with each piece and thought it was awesome to be able to improve each time.
Minnesota was a great host and we had a lot of fun doing race pieces against them with our fleet of eights. They also hosted two other Wisconsin teams that same day, women's soccer and women's hockey. I'd say it was a pretty big border battle this weekend!
As our fall season winds down, we are gearing up for our in house Badger Challenge this Saturday. This is a great way for us to build as a team and have some fun competition!
