Davis and staff announce five Badgers to join program
MADISON, Wis. — National Signing Day has arrived, and the Wisconsin wrestling program has added five standout wrestlers who signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The list includes four from the state of Wisconsin and three top-100 recruits.
Jeremy Schoenherr
Coming from Division 3 powerhouse Stratford High School, three-time team MVP Jeremy Schoenherr is staying in his home state to wrestle collegiately. The three-time state champion is one of the top wrestlers in the state of Wisconsin and is ranked as the 71st-ranked recruit in the country, and 13th in the 141-pound weight class, by Flowrestling. As a freshman, he took the state title at 113 pounds and was Central Plains Freestyle Regional Champion. He would claim the state title as a sophomore in the 126-pound weight class, going 42-0, as well as being a Fargo All-American and a Freestyle State Champion. His junior year he won the state title yet again, this time at the 138-pound weight class going undefeated. Schoenherr also took second as a Fargo All-American, fifth in the Preseason Nationals, and a team state title.
Head Coach Barry Davis on Schoenherr:
"Jeremy Schoenherr is going to bring energy, passion, toughness and grit with him from Stratford to Madison. He has shown that he can beat the best by finishing second in Fargo this past year and by winning three-straight state titles. Jeremy is someone who does the little things right…he takes care of his body, eats well, is dedicated to strength training, and works on his mental game. These are the main factors that have gotten him to this point and will be the reasons why he will be a successful college wrestler. He has a nasty inside trip and can score points in bunches but also can control positions to make it difficult to get scored on."
Jared Krattiger
Currently the 57th-ranked high school prospect and sixth in the 184-pound weight class in the country by Flowrestling, Waterford native Jared Krattiger will soon become well known in his state capitol. Dominant in high school, he has compiled a 142-4 record going into his senior year. As a freshman he was Waterford's MVP, placing fifth at state as well as taking third at Cadet Folkstyle nationals. In his sophomore campaign, he took a big step up, becoming a Cadet Folkstyle national champion, Cadet Freestyle state champ, finishing fourth at Flo-Nationals, and finishing third at state with a 49-1 record. His junior year included a 50-1 finish in route to a third-place finish at state, and a rank of eighth in the country by FloWrestling.
Davis on Krattiger:
"Jared has wrestled and beaten some of the best competition in the country. He is strong, fast and tough. He is a guy who will be able to step into the lineup and score points as soon as he is needed. A guy who gets it done on the mat and in the classroom Jared has high goals for himself, goals that we feel he can obtain here at UW. Jared is the epitome of what we look for in a recruit. He's a team-first guy who will come in and bring an incredible work ethic as well as a unique skill set that will propel our team to another level!"
Joey Sanchez
Another recruit from successful Saint Paris Graham High School, Ohio native Joey Sanchez is slated for a promising collegiate career. Sanchez has a 100-16 record entering his final high school season and is a team captain for SPG. As a freshman he went 27-2, becoming a Tournament of Champions All-American, in addition to a OHSWCA Academic All-Ohio honors. In his sophomore year, he was a Tournament of Champions All-American again, a Disney Duals All-American, Scholastic Duals All-American, again earned OHSWCA Academic All-Ohio honors and claimed a fifth-place finish at state. A team captain as a junior, Sanchez finished fourth at state, also earning NHSCA junior All-American honors, OHSWCA Academic All-Ohio honors and Scholastic Duals All-America status.
Head Coach Barry Davis on Sanchez:
"Joey is the only out-of-state kid from this class so far but he already feels like family. He will fit in perfectly with our culture. He comes from one of the best high school wrestling programs in the country, St. Paris Graham in Ohio. He and Eli Stickley's families have been good friends for a while, which makes the transition easier for him. He has worked himself into one of the best wrestlers in Ohio. Because of his work ethic and skill set, his upside is tremendous. Joey has a great swing single that has been proven effective at the college level. He is even a better young man then he is wrestler… he will be a leader for our team in the future."
Tyler Dow
Soon-to-be the second Badger from Stoughton, Tyler Dow will once again join current UW freshman Garrett Model as a teammate next season. Ranked eighth in the country in the 174-pound weight class by Flowrestling, Dow brings high-level experience to the Badgers. In his freshman year, he was a freestyle and Greco state champion, as well as a Fargo Freestyle and Greco All-American. His sophomore year brought even more success as he was a state runner-up in addition to a USAW National Champion, Freestyle State champion, Fargo Freestyle All-American, UWW Nationals All-American, Pan American champion, Greco state champion, Fargo Greco All-American runner-up, and fourth-place finisher in the UWW Greco Nationals. His junior year was even better, as he won his first state title at 160 pounds along with another Greco and Freestyle state title. He was yet again a Fargo Freestyle and Greco All-American, finishing second in both bouts. Dow also became a UWW Junior Greco Open National Champion, finishing sixth in the UWW Freestyle Nationals.
Davis on Dow:
"Tyler is a special kid. He has been coming to Badger wrestling meets since he was a little kid, we've always thought of him as part of the Badger family. He is one of the nicest young men you could meet but is a fierce competitor. He gets better every time he steps on the mat, uses every opportunity to make himself a better wrestler. Tyler may be the most dangerous wrestler in the country in any upper body scenario, he's not afraid to go big. We can't think of a better individual to continue to build the program around!"
Drew Scharenbrock
The second of the Scharenbrock brothers, Drew will be joining his brother Jared in Madison for the 2018 season. Just like his brother, Drew has enjoyed a successful high school career at nearby Sun Prairie. Entering his senior season, he has compiled a 140-14 record, as well as national experience. As a freshman, he qualified for the WIAA state tournament and finished eighth in the USAW Folkstyle Nationals. A jump in success came in his sophomore campaign, when he went 52-2 and placed fourth at state. He took the state crown at 138 pounds in his third year with a 48-2 finish, and also took fourth in the USAW Folkstyle Nationals.
Davis on Scharenbrock:
"Drew will be the second Scharenbrock on the team… we are so excited to be getting another member of this great family. Drew has been around the program for a while and believes in the direction we are heading. He turned down some Ivy league schools to get his education here at UW-Madison. That just shows the level of Drew's academic performance as well as the level of academics we have here. Drew is the best rider of this class… he can ride and turn anyone. He's especially dangerous from a leg in position. Drew is so strong for his weight; this is going to be a huge attribute for him while making the jump from high school to college.
