Callie at the Catch: Reindeer Run
December 14, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Badgers get in the holiday spirit for run between Porter Boathouse and the Capitol
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Madison, Wis. -- The Badgers ran their 70th (or so we think) annual Reindeer Run this past weekend. Every year it gets the whole team together for a little fun, a little run and gets us all in the holiday spirit as well as all the people we see on our way.
The route for this run is the Capitol and back. Nothing too crazy, but there are a couple of elements added to spice things up. First, we are all dressed up in holiday spirit with some restrictions. We always have our one head Santa Claus and one non-denominational snowflake, and then the novices dress up as reindeer. I would say they did a fantastic job finding brown clothes and antlers this year. As for the rest of the team, we can dress up in any thing in the holiday spirit. This year we had some children on Christmas morning as well as a Wisconsin dad on Christmas morning, candy canes, presents, Christmas trees, a menorah, coal, scrooge and many more!
Next, from the moment we step out of the boathouse to start the run, we are singing. We sing any holiday, Christmas or Hanukkah song we know the entire time and sometimes throw in some Wisconsin songs, too. The best part about being a large group in holiday outfits and singing holiday songs down State Street is all the people who smile, clap, sing along or take video.
And third, when we reach the Capitol we get a nice little break as we head inside quietly to see the large Christmas tree in the middle. We circle around and 'whisper' sing a few songs. Then we head outside to take our group picture and begin the run back to the boathouse while still singing loudly for all to hear.
Now we head into finals. What a perfect treat to the end of the year!
