Callie at the Catch: “Graduation”

Grad reception and Winter Commencement weekend leads to Florida training
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- This past weekend the Badger senior class and our fifth-year coaches celebrated graduation at the student-athlete graduation reception Friday evening, followed by the Winter Commencement at the Kohl Center on Sunday. Though only four Badgers were actually graduating, the seniors who will graduate in the spring had also attended and celebrated a few months early.
Why, you may ask? Well, the spring season is our racing season and on graduation day, we will be racing at the 2018 Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis. So, the seniors pretended for a few hours this past weekend they had graduated college, but actually still have final exams and papers this week followed by another semester.
The student-athlete reception was an incredible showcase of the graduating classes of each sport and their accomplishments. The connections and support made between the athletic department staff and the athletes were heartwarming to watch and be a part of. The strong bonds made over the past four years or so made our experience the best it could be and we would not have achieved what we did or will this spring without them.
In the end, each student-athlete received their invite to the W Club and their special stoles for the Winter Commencement.
It was an exciting time and a refreshing break from finals, but now we head back to studying and proof-reading papers before we get to go our separate ways for the holidays. Soon enough we will reconvene at our favorite winter training destination, Cocoa Beach, Florida, in January.
