AMES, Iowa – The Wisconsin women's track and field team had another round of strong performances during the second day of the Iowa State Classic Saturday afternoon at the Lied Recreation Center.
Junior Taylor Amann nearly broke the school record in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches on her third attempt. Amann is now one inch shy of posting the best mark in school history.
Also competing in the pole vault, freshman Chinne Okoronkwo cleared 12-5 1/2 to tie for third.
The Badger's best performance on the track came from senior Brenna Detra, who ran a five second personal record in the 800 meters. Her time of 2 minutes, 6.47 seconds ranks fifth all-time at Wisconsin and is the fastest time by a Badger since Jenni Westphal clocked in at 2:06.41 on Feb. 14, 1998. Detra finished ninth in the stacked event.
In the shot put, sophomore Kennedy Blahnik led the way for the Cardinal and White, throwing 51-1 1/2 on her second attempt to finish third. Fellow sophomore Banke Oginni placed fifth with a mark of 49-1 after winning the weight throw yesterday.
Emma Reifel and Emma Langer combined to sweep the top two places of the unseeded mile. Reifel won the even with a time of 4:55.61 with Langer crossing the line runner-up in a personal-best 4:55.99.
Three Badgers qualified for finals in the triple jump. Freshman Meagan Blair led the way with a jump of 38-2 1/4, placing sixth. Sophomore Tiffany Ike placed seventh with a mark of 37-6 ¾ and freshman Mary Bartelson was ninth with a jump of 36-3 1/2.
Freshman Gabby DesRosiers ran her second fastest 400 meters of the season, placing 11th of 43 with a time of 55.93.
The Badgers stay home next weekend, hosting the first-ever Wisconsin Shell Shocker Friday at the Shell. Field events start at 3 p.m. and running events begin at 5 p.m.
