UW returns home to final tune-up before Big Tens
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's track and field team competes in its last indoor home meet on Friday at the Wisconsin Shell Shocker. The meet starts with field events at 3 p.m. while races on the track begin at 5:30 p.m.
Throwers Banke Oginni, Haley Showalter and Hanna Barton kick-off the meet with the weight throw. All three Badgers have recorded personal bests at home this season. Oginni is undefeated in the weight throw and has the eighth-best throw in the NCAA this year of 70 feet, 10 1/2 inches.
After the weight throw, Kennedy Blahnik and Oginni will compete in shot put. Blahnik's best throw of the year was a 52-1 3/4 bomb at the Wisconsin Icebreaker. In addition, former UW thrower Kelsey Card, a 2016 Olympian, will compete in the event.
Sophomore Emma Haugen is on the brink of a personal record in the high jump. At the last three meets she has finished within one inch of her 5-9 3/4 personal best. This weekend she will be joined by multi-event athletes Georgia Ellenwood and Casie Pawlik who look to refine their high jumping skills before the Big Ten pentathlon next weekend.
Pole vaulter Taylor Amann will have a chance to show the home crowd what she's all about. Amann currently ranks second in the Big Ten and second in Wisconsin history after upping her personal record to 13-5 1/4, one inch shy of the school record, at the Iowa State Classic. Jane McCurry and Claire Buck will also have the go in pole vault.
Six different Badgers will compete in the horizontal jumps at the Shell Shocker. Freshman Chinne Okoronkwo leads the brigade in the triple jump. At the Minnesota Dual, she dazzled everybody with a 42-7 jump, good for second all-time at Wisconsin. Sophomore Tiffany Ike and freshmen Meagan Blair, Mary Bartelson and Katie Steele round out the triple jumpers.
In long jump, Bartelson looks to have another big day at home. She recorded a personal-best 18-7 ¼ at the Minnesota dual. Joining her will be Blair and freshman Annie Wagner.
The mile run gets things going on the track. Freshmen Alissa Niggemann and Anissa Hacker are the two Badgers competing.
After an abundance of personal bests in the 400 meters at the Iowa State Classic, freshmen Autumn Wickman, Cynthia Ubah and Haley Lubow are back at it this weekend. Wickman ran a personal record of 59.22 seconds in Iowa and leads the trio of 400 runners heading into the meet.
In the 60 hurdles, representing Wisconsin will be freshmen Ruth Cesar-Heymann and Annie Wagner. Cesar-Heymann's best performance of the season came in a sixth place finish at the Black and Gold Premier. Wagner's best race of the season is also a sixth place finish at the Minnesota Dual.
Big guns Ebony McClendon and Gabby DesRosiers look to tune up their speed in the 60 meters this weekend. At the Iowa State Classic, McClendon won the event, tying her personal best of 7.45, which is one hundredth of a second behind the school record. Freshman Ruth Cesar-Heymann will also be competing in the 60 meters for the second time this season.
Sophomore Elli Daniels will be the Badgers' lone runner in the 800 meters before a slew of Badgers compete in the 3000 meters. Sophomore Shaelyn Sorensen ran a personal-best 9:41.53 and senior Sarah Heinemann recorded a personal record of 9:42.85, taking eighth and ninth at the Armory Invitational. Erin Wagner, Lianna Mack, Jamie Shannon and Rachel Fleddermann will also race for the Cardinal and White.
