Badgers to compete in Big Apple against big-time competition
MADISON, Wis. – For the fourth-straight year, the Wisconsin men's and women's track and field teams will take on some of the nation's best Friday and Saturday at the Armory Invitational in New York City. Â
Â
Â
Wisconsin's top distance runners will be back in action this weekend, highlighted by junior Morgan McDonald competing in the elite 3000 meters. McDonald will toe the line with professional runner Drew Hunter and 2016 Paralympics gold medalist Mike Brannigan, as well as seven of the top collegiate runners.
Â
Junior Sarah Disanza is returning to The Armory after being unable to compete last year. She started the indoor season on a good note, winning the 3000 meters at Wisconsin's dual with Minnesota with a time of 9:32.82.
Â
The men's mile features a quintuplet of Badgers, led by redshirt freshman Olin Hacker. Hacker won the 3000 meters his last time out at the dual against Minnesota. He will be joined by Joe Hardy, Russell Sandvold, McKena Ramos and Cooper Barth.
Â
In the women's 3000 meters, six Badgers are slated to compete, including Amy Davis, Sarah Heinemann, Michele Lee, Shaelyn Sorensen, Erin Wagner and Jamie Shannon. On the men's side, Russell Sandvold, Joe Hardy, Tyson Miehe and Ben Eidenschink will take on the field.
Â
Four-time All-American Malachy Schrobilgen will make his first appearance of the season in the 5000 meters.
Â
Freshman triple jumper Chinne Okoronkwo is primed for a big weekend. She currently ranks second all-time at Wisconsin, 17th in the NCAA and has the second-best mark of all freshman this season after competing in the event only once. Sophomore Tiffany Ike will also represent Wisconsin in the triple jump after earning a personal-best in UW's dual meet with Minnesota
Â
Sprinters Ebony McClendon and Lorenzo Larry brought home a pair of victories in the 60 meters at the Black and Gold Premier. Both have come extremely close to personal record times this season and some tough competition could help them over that barrier.
Â
Senior Brenna Detra will run her first 800 of the year. At the Black and Gold Premier Detra won the 600 meters, clocking in one second shy of a personal best. She currently ranks fourth all-time in the 600 meters and is just three seconds shy of UW's top mark.
Â
Also competing in the 800 meters are Emma Reifel, Emma Langer, McKena Ramos, Cooper Barth and Eric Brown.Â
Â
Four UW mullti-event athletes will compete this weekend in the 60 hurdles, as Georgia Ellenwood, this week's Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, and Casie Pawlik will race for the UW women. Last week's Black and Gold Premier Heptathlon champion Brandon Mortenson, along with runner-up Trent Nytes, will toe the line in the men's 60 hurdles. Â
Â
Action in the Big Apple starts on Friday at 11 a.m. CT and Saturday at 8 a.m. The meet can be seen live on RunnerSpace Plus while McDonald's race will be shown tape delayed on NBCSN late Saturday afternoon.
