Wisconsin lightweights complete sweep of Grand Valley State
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team built on its strong start to the spring season this weekend with a sweep of Grand Valley State University.
Four boats competed in three races each throughout the day, all claiming victories over GVSU.
"Today's race allowed us to line up multiple times in varying conditions, which is exactly what our program needs." said head coach Dusty Mattison.
The varsity boat finished strong, defeating GVSU's varsity eight in all three races by 10.5 seconds, 17 seconds and 15.4 seconds, respectively.
The second varsity eight and novice eight both competed in the same race against Grand Valley State, with the second lightweight eight coming in first and the novice eight coming in second three consecutive times.
The varsity four, composed primarily of freshmen, saw its first action of the spring to round out the day. The boat defeated GVSU's novice four in all three races, each time by over a minute.
"As a whole we are really starting to find our racing rhythm, which is exciting to see!" said Mattison
UW's lightweight team heads to Worcester, Massachusetts, next weekend to compete in the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, April 30.
