DES MOINES, Iowa – The Wisconsin men's track and field team picked up a pair of runner-up finishes during the distance carnival at the 2017 Drake Relays on Thursday at Drake Stadium.
Senior
Malachy Schrobilgen finished second in the seeded 5000 meters in a personal-best time in 13 minutes, 49.68 seconds. Schrobilgen was towards the front of the pack for a majority of the race and had the lead until the final 100 meters as Drake's Reed Fischer passed Schrobilgen en route to the win.
Fellow senior
Russell Sandvold also set a personal-best in the 5000 meters as he finished sixth in 13:57.81.
"Malachy just unfortunately got outkicked there," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "He had to do a lot of running from a mile out and he didn't get any help. If he had gotten help, it might've gone a different way but Malachy got a personal record out of it and so did Russ."
In the men's 4x1600-meter relay, the Badgers clocked the second-fastest time in program history en route to a runner-up finish. The quarter of
Joe Hardy,
Carl Hirsch, Ollie Hoare and
Morgan McDonald crossed the line in 16:19.66, less than two seconds behind Oklahoma State.
"We enjoy this," Byrne said. "It's different than going out and chasing times, this is all about competing and having fun and racing. We gave it a shot."
The Badgers and Cowboys traded the lead throughout the race, as Hardy gave UW the lead after the first leg (4:07.57). Hirsch ran a solid leg (4:06.60) as the Badgers sat at the midway point in second before Hoare, a true freshman, grabbed the baton for UW.
Hoare gave UW the lead (4:03.01) before McDonald took things over for UW. McDonald, who made his outdoor debut on Thursday, ran the second-fastest leg of the entire race (4:02.48), but OSU's Joshua Thompson took the lead with less than 800 meters to go and never looked back.
Sophomore
Cooper Barth took second in the unseeded 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1:51.35, while fellow sophomore
Tyson Miehe set a personal-best in the 5000 meters in 14:22.21 en route to an 11th-place showing.
"Overall, it was a fantastic night," Byrne said. "It's what we came here for."
UW resumes action at the Drake Relays tomorrow afternoon. UW will compete in a 4x100-meter relay at 12:05 p.m. while
Rashid Coulibaly and
Tim Guthrie will vault at 12:30 p.m.
