Fitzgerald leads Badgers after first day of heptathlon

Wisconsin completes the first day of multi-event action at Jim Click Shootout

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Badgers had strong performances all around Thursday afternoon during the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon at the Jim Click Shootout.
 
In the heptathlon, Emma Fitzgerald sits in 11th place after the first four events with 2930 points. Casie Pawlik and Phoebe Edwards rank 13th and 14th with 2884 and 2799 points, respectively. Annie Wagner is 20th with 2345 points.
 
Pawlik led the Badgers with a time of 14.52 in the 100 hurdles. Fitzgerald ran a 14.92, Phoebe Edwards clocked in at 15.53 and Annie Wagner crossed the line in 16.77.
 
In the high jump, Edwards, Fitzgerald and Pawlik all cleared 5-2 ¾ which is a personal record for Fitzgerald and Pawlik. Wagner jumped 4-9.
 
In the third event of the day, Edwards threw a bomb of 35-6 ¾ on her second attempt. Fitzgerald tossed a 34-11 ¾, Wagner threw 33-5 and Pawlik's mark was 30-3 ¼.
 
Day one concluded with the 200 meters, where Fitzgerald paced the team with a time of 26.33. Pawlik was one place behind with a 26.39, Edwards clocked a 27.08 and Wagner crossed in 28.22.

In the decathlon, Trent Nytes leads the competition with a score of 3,817 points.
 
The sophomore kicked things off in the decathlon with an 11.24 second 100 meters. His time was the second-best in the field to Olympian Damian Warner. The sophomore was well off his personal best in the long jump marking 21 feet, 8 1/2 inches, but bounced back nicely with personal-best throw of 43-11 3/4 in the shot put. Nytes ranked third with 2225 points after three events.
 
The Kaukauna, Wisconsin native closed out his last two events of day one in style. Nytes nabbed the top spot in the high jump, clearing 6-7 3/4. This bumped him into the lead with 3056 points. In the 400 meters, the sophomore ran a personal-best 51.17 to hold onto his first place spot. Nytes had a first-day point total of 3,817.
 
The multi-events conclude tomorrow with the decathlon starting at noon CT and the heptathlon resuming at 1 p.m.
