
UW heads to Penn State for Big Ten championships

Badgers will send 23 athletes to compete at conference outdoor meet
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's track and field team will open outdoor postseason competition this weekend at the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Competition for the conference meet in the Keystone State begins on Friday at 11 a.m. CT with the decathlon 100 meters and the women's hammer throw. The decathlon 110-hurdles kick starts action on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. while the men's triple jump opens competition on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Track events will be streamed on BTN2Go on Saturday and Sunday while a tape-delayed broadcast of the meet will be shown on BTN on Sunday at 6 p.m.
One of the top performances in Wisconsin history came in the high jump at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic. Sophomore Emma Haugen won the event with a height of 6 feet (1.83 meters) which lands herself second on the all-time list and second in the Big Ten this season. The reigning Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, Haugen looks to duplicate her outstanding performance on Saturday.
In the pole vault, Taylor Amann leads a field of three Badgers that are ready to earn high scores at the conference meet. The junior comes in with the fourth-best mark in the conference at 13-6 1/2 (4.13m), which she cleared during her victory at the home meet this past weekend. Jane McCurry and Chinne Okoronkwo will also compete in the event, with marks in the top 15 of the Big Ten. Okoronkwo is also appearing in the triple jump, holding the fifth-best distance in the conference, and four victories this season.
Kennedy Blahnik, Hanna Barton, Banke Oginni and Danielle Weber are all set to compete in the throws at the conference meet. After going one-two at the home meet in the shot put, Blahnik and Oginni are both in the top 10 of the Big Ten with Blahnik's mark of 51-1 (15.57m) earning the top Wisconsin mark this year. She also comes in with a top-10 discus distance, completing the double crown at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic with a mark of 171-6 (52.28m). Weber holds the 12th-best throw in the javelin and Barton ranks 13th in the discus.
On the track, Ebony McClendon has continued her fantastic year stemming from the indoor season with top-five times in the conference in both the 100 and 200 meters. In addition, Gabrielle DesRosiers holds the 20th-best time in the 400 meters with a time of 55.17 during a fourth-place finish at the Jim Click Shootout.
Senior Brenna Detra comes into the meet with the fourth-best time in the 400 meter hurdles (57.83) and four top-three finishes this season, including a victory at the UC-Riverside Spring Classic in March. Teammate Haley Lubow will also be running for Wisconsin this weekend and comes in with a top time of 1:04.71 in the 400 hurdles.
Senior Sarah Heinemann will compete in the 1500 meters this weekend after earning a personal-best time of 4:26.48 at last week's Wisconsin Alumni Classic.
In the distance events, Sarah Disanza will lead the Badgers into the 5000 meters as she is seeded third in the conference with a personal-best time of 15:55.57. Amy Davis and Alicia Monson are also seeded in the top eight as Davis is ranked No. 6 and Monson checks in at No. 7. Heinemann is also entered into the event.
Davis, Michele Lee and Shaelyn Sorenen are all set to compete in the 10,000 meters as Lee finished sixth in the event at last year's Big Ten meet.
Erin Wagner will compete in the steeplechase as she enters the weekend with two victories in the event, including last weekend when she ran a personal-best time of 10:41.82.
Wisconsin will have three competitors in the heptathlon with Phoebe Edwards, Emma Fitzgerald and Casie Pawlik ready for action. Pawlik delivered the top multi-event mark this season with a total of 4,724 points at the Jim Click Shootout, good for sixth-best in the conference. Edwards result of 4,603 ranks seventh in the conference, while Fitzgerald holds the school record and second-best mark in the conference in the javelin throw with a distance of 170-6 (51.98m).
