MADISON, Wis.— "We're going to go be a bull in a china shop and try to mess some people's plans up."
Senior
Chloe Miller said it best for the Wisconsin softball team, who worked hard all season and is now dancing its way into the NCAA tournament.
The unseeded Badgers (33-15 overall) earned a spot at the Eugene Regional alongside Missouri, Oregon and Illinois-Chicago. The four teams will compete Friday-Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium in a double-elimination format, with the winner advancing to the best-of-three Super Regional.
"Making it, I think it just shows that everybody came here to try to start a winning legacy and to again make it to the NCAA Tournament three of the last five years at the University of Wisconsin, such a thrill," head coach
Yvette Healy said.
The Cardinal and White open regional action against Missouri (29-26, 7-16 SEC), matching up for just the fourth time in program record. Wisconsin trails the all-time series, 2-1, with the sole victory coming with an 8-3 win in 2001. The Tigers are coming off of a 6-5 loss to LSU in the first round of the SEC tournament.
"It was honestly indescribable, super unbelievable," Miller said of the Badgers' regional bid. "We worked really hard for this, this was what our goal was at the beginning of the season. We didn't know if we could get there. It's so good for the program moving forward. We're all just so happy right now that it's an unreal feeling."
Wisconsin is headed to familiar territory, returning to site of its last two NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2014. Although the Badgers picked up a pair of wins over Albany during the 2014 Eugene Regional, they fell to Oregon, 6-1 and 6-0.
The third-seeded Ducks enter the regional on a 10-game winning streak, holding a 47-6 season record and going 17-6 in the PAC-12. The hosts open the weekend against Illinois-Chicago (38-20, 20-4 Horizon), who earned an automatic bid after winning the Horizon League title.
Wisconsin, 5-10 in its five previous tournament appearances, has faced off against six NCAA tournament teams during the regular season, going 3-7 against the field. However, instead of worrying about any underestimations, the Badgers are embracing the chance to topple some best-laid plans.
"When you're hanging on by a thread," Healy said, "You think there's just such a chance you're not going to keep playing. I feel like we've got a second chance at life and I'm really excited to see the team play."
Miller is the only member of the current team that saw time in the squad's 2014 tournament run, where she was named to the All-Tournament team after hitting two home runs against Albany and tallying three hits in the loss to Oregon that ended UW's season.
The Badgers' 8 p.m. CT contest with Missouri will be live on ESPN.
