AUSTIN, Texas – The Wisconsin women's track and field team opened the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Round with several solid performances on Thursday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Despite having to wait more than 10 minutes to run due to a timing issue, junior
Brenna Detra advanced to the next round of the women's 400 hurdles. Detra finished third in her section in 59.94 to advance to the Friday's quarterfinal.
In the pole vault, junior
Taylor Amann came close to making a return trip to the NCAA outdoor championships, as she set an outdoor personal best 13-9 ¼, but was unable to clear 14-1 ¼, which would have put the Hartland, Wisconsin, native in a position to advance. Amann ultimately finished 17th in the competition.
Freshman Chinne Okoronkwo also competed in the pole vault and tied for 26th with a clearance of 12-11 1/2. She will also compete this weekend in the triple jump at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday.
In the women's 10,000 meters, senior
Michele Lee finished 22nd in her final race for the Cardinal and White, crossing the line in 35:50.66. Sophomore
Shaelyn Sorensen started strong with her senior teammate, but did not finish the race.
Freshman
Emma Fitzgerald finished 23rd in the javelin with a toss of 149-10, while sophomore
Ebony McClendon was 28th in the 100 meters in 11.47.
The Badgers resume action on Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin.
Emma Haugen is the first Badger scheduled to compete as the sophomore will compete in the high jump at 4:30 p.m.
