RESULTS
MADISON, Wis. – A trio of former Wisconsin women's rowers headed over the Atlantic Ocean for the weekend to race in the 2017 World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland. The event runs June 16-18.
A pair of 2011 UW graduates in Grace Latz (Jackson, Michigan) and Vicky Opitz (Middleton), who are also racing for the United States in the women's eight, opened their competition in the straight women's four on Friday. USA's second entry placed fourth in the six-boat exhibition heat. The boat crossed 2000 meters in 6:30.770, just over six seconds behind first-place Australia.
All six boats will race again in the final.
Latz and Opitz begin women's eight racing on Saturday with an exhibition heat, before Sunday's final. Opitz is a world record-holder in the event, helping set the world's best time of 5:54.160 at the 2013 World Rowing Cup III in Switzerland.
Sophia Vitas, a 2016 UW graduate and Franklin native, strokes one of two American entries in the women's pair. The Vitas crew will race against Great Britain, New Zealand, Chile, Australia and Ireland in a Saturday repechage. The boat clocked a 7:24.670 for 2000 meters in Friday's second heat. Only the winner of the heat advanced directly to the Sunday Final.
