EUGENE, Ore.– The Wisconsin track and field program will wrap up its collegiate season this week with the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Eight Badgers - five men and three women – will compete at the outdoor meet, which can be viewed this weekend on the family of ESPN networks. All the track events will be shown either on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, while all the field events can be seen live on ESPN3 or via the Watch ESPN application.
Four Badgers will get things going on Wednesday as Riley Budde will compete in the men's hammer throw at 4 p.m. CT. Budde ranks second in school history with a personal-best and season-best effort of 219 feet, 1 inch, set earlier this year at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic.
Rashid Coulibaly is the second Badger to compete in Eugene as the true freshman is one of 24 athletes set to compete in the men's pole vault at 7 p.m. Coulibaly set a personal-best of 17-6 1/2 at the NCAA West Preliminary, the best ever jump by a Badger freshman, to qualify for the NCAA meet.
Hours after competing in the hammer, Budde, along with junior Josh McDonald will throw the shot put at 8:40 p.m. Budde holds the school record in the event with a toss of 63-8 3/4 set at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic, while McDonald set his outdoor PR of 59-7 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
The final Badger to compete on Wednesday is senior Malachy Schrobilgen, who will race for the final time in the Cardinal and White at 9:08 p.m. in the men's 10,000 meters live on ESPN2. A four-time Big Ten champion, Schrobilgen earned first-team All-America honors in the 10K at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Junior
Brenna Detra is the lone Badger scheduled to compete on Thursday as she will race in the semifinals of the women's 400 hurdles at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Detra has a season-best of 57.64 seconds in the event while her personal best of 57.56 ranks second in program history. The finals of the 400 hurdles will take place on Saturday at 6.57 p.m. on ESPN.
Seattle native Joe Hardy makes his return to the Pacific Northwest on Friday in the men's 5000 meters at 9:25 p.m. live on ESPN. Hardy raced to a fifth-place showing in his section of the 5000 meters at the NCAA West Prelims to advance to the NCAA championships for the second time in his career.
Sophomore
Emma Haugen will make her NCAA debut in the women's high jump on Saturday at 3 p.m. Haugen is only one of two athletes in program history to clear six feet in the outdoor high jump and is the first Badger to compete in the event at the NCAA meet since 2011.
The final Badger to compete at this year's NCAA championships is
Sarah Disanza. The redshirt junior will race in the women's 5000 meters on Saturday at 7:25 p.m. on ESPN. Disanza ran the seventh-fastest outdoor 5000 meters in school history earlier this year at the Stanford Invite and holds the school record in the indoor 5000 meters.
