Badgers win silvers at World Rowing Under 23 Championships
July 23, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Two of seven Wisconsin rowers will return home with medals
PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Wisconsin women's rower Maddie Wanamaker and men's rower Kyle James helped Team USA win two of its five medals at the 2017 World Rowing Under 23 Championships that finished Sunday on the Maritsa River.
Maddie Wanamaker (Neenah, Wis.) and the women's eight will come back to the U.S. wearing silver medals, extending their streak to 12 consecutive World Rowing Under 23 Championships with a medal.
The boat led Canada before the halfway mark, but mechanical problems with a seat slowed the crew and dropped them into second place.
The Canadians went on to win with a time of 6:09.89. The U.S. crossed the 2000-meter finish line second in 6:16.44.
Kyle James (Princeton, New Jersey) won silver in the lightweight men's four, passing crews from India, France and Germany over the second half of the race to grab second place. The silver medals for the Americans marked their first medal of any kind in the event since 2010.
"During the exhibition race, we were down on some of the others in the field. Today we were fourth until 1000 meters where we were battling it out with Germany," James said to USRowing. "At the halfway mark, we made our usual commitment. Going into the last 600 meters we brought it up every 200 meters and just took control to grab second."
UW's final competitor on the final day of the 2017 event included James Bernard (Ann Arbor, Michigan), who raced in the men's eight.
The boat finished its race just outside the medal, claiming fourth in 5:35.74.
The Netherlands won in 5:29.55, with Romania winning silver in 5:31.640 and Great Britain racing to the bronze medal in 5:37.490.
Four other Badgers finished up on Saturday, including ninth-place finishes for Andrew Griffin in the men's four and Thomas Walker in the lightweight men's pair, a 10th-place result for Lexi Siverling in the women's four and Nickolas Montalvo's 20th-place finish in the men's double sculls.
