First Badger men's golfer to be honored since 2015
MADISON, Wis. – After recording a top-10 finish in his first tournament as a Badger, freshman Griffin Barela was named Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Barela is the first Badger to be honored by the Big Ten since Jack Watson on April 15, 2015, and he is just the second UW freshman to earn Big Ten Golfer of the Week laurels. Garrett Jones earned the award on March 11, 2005 in the midst of setting the Wisconsin freshman single-season scoring record.
Barela is one of just eight Badgers to earn Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors, dating back to the award's inception in 1999.
"Walking with Griffin the entire event I was more than impressed by his composure and course management," Wisconsin head coach Michael Burcin said. "The scores he put up, though very good, were not a true indication of just how well he played. For a freshman, that is very encouraging."
At the season-opening Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course, the Lakewood, Colorado, native strung together three consecutive sub-par rounds. Barela opened with back-to-back rounds of 71 before shooting a 69 in Tuesday's final round. His 54-hole total of 211 (-5) led the Badgers to a fifth-place team finish.
