Shootout in Durham: Badgers fall 4-3 to Duke
September 19, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Catalano, Mueller and Segbers find the net in road loss
DURHAM, N.C. – Despite scoring three goals from set pieces, including two in the first 22 minutes, the Wisconsin men's soccer team fell to Duke, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Koskinen Stadium.
In what was one of the most heated battles of the season, the Badgers (3-2-2, 1-1-0 Big Ten) got on the board early against the Blue Devils (5-1-1), who are receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll, courtesy of two goals coming directly after corner kicks.
Senior Mike Catalano headed in a shot after fellow senior Chris Mueller sent in a high arching ball from the corner in the ninth minute. Mueller rolled back the tape again in the 22nd minute, sending in the perfect volley for senior Mark Segbers, who slotted the ball in to give the Badgers a 2-0 lead.
Duke rebounded in the 28th minute as Kevon Black used the assists from Daniele Proch and Carter Manley to come within one of the Badgers. Jack Doran knotted the game at 2-2 in the 37th minute after Doran shot it in from 20 yards outside.
The Blue Devils took control at the beginning of the second half as Cameron Moseley capitalized on the dish from Black to give Duke the 3-2 lead in the 45th minute.
But Mueller and the Badgers fought back, as the senior capitalized on a beautiful free kick, sending the ball into the top-left corner in the 76th minute to even the score.
No more than one minute later, Duke recaptured the lead off of another goal from Mosely to deflate the Badgers' momentum.
It was a chippy game as both teams drew 15 fouls a piece. Duke led the Badgers 18-12 in shots but Wisconsin prevailed in corner kicks 3-2.
Up Next: Wisconsin looks forward to the welcome sight of the McClimon Complex on Saturday night when it looks to protect its undefeated home record against Penn State. The Badgers and Nittany Lions will kick off at 7 p.m. CT.
