Callie at the Catch: Climb On
September 28, 2017 | Women's Rowing
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- After an incredible week of rowing, the varsity team took a day off the water for a team retreat. We all packed in to the yellow school bus and headed up north to Devil's Lake for some hiking and rock climbing in the extreme 90-degree weather.
If you have ever been to Devil's Lake, you know how beautiful it is from all sides. We definitely were able to witness this as we hiked all around the lake from the bottom to the top. To make things even more fun, we sang the entire way. Coach Jim may have had a good laugh at that.
But, what may be an even better view was from the top of the rock we just worked so hard to climb, looking out, being so high up in the air, and having this peaceful feeling. Of course, we would not have made it all the way up if our professional instructors did not take the time to teach us how to belay or give us guidance on where our next foothold or handhold should be. No matter what climb or rock we attempted, no one gave up as we were all determined to make it to the top.
Junior Lauren Ross said, "I thought it was cool that we were able to belay each other and really build trust so that when we were 50 feet in the air we still knew the girl on the ground had our backs and how much that relates to rowing."
That is true trust right there.
Afterwards, we ran over to the lake and jumped right in. It was a long hike and climb during a gorgeous, but hot day and the quick dip in the water was so refreshing.
Ross continued as she thought, "Our general team attitude during climbing and hiking this weekend was amazing."
She really loved how supportive and how focused everyone was on making sure whoever was climbing succeeded in their mission. We cheered each other on and encourage those who were nervous.
This trip was such a fun day and a nice break from our daily routine. However, Sunday we were all feeling a new kind of sore and bruises were beginning to appear. But this only reminded us of how great this day was and how proud we are to be apart of this team.
