Latz, Vitas and Aghai advance in the eights
SARASOTA, Fla. – All four Wisconsin rowing alumni competing in the 2017 FISA World Rowing Championships were in action on Thursday and three of the four advanced to Sunday's Finals, where they will race for world titles.
This year's event is taking place in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida, and in the United States for the first time since 1994.
In the women's eight, Badgers Grace Latz (Jackson, Michigan), a 2016 Olympian, and Sophia Vitas (Franklin, Wisconsin) helped the crew take second behind Canada in the repechage, where the top four finishers advanced to the Final. The American crew (6:11.830) finished just over a half second behind Canada (6:11.320) on the 2000-meter course.
The U.S. women look to keep alive an 11-year World and Olympic gold medal streak on Sunday.
For the men's eight, bow seat Dariush "Tim" Aghai (Skokie, Illinois) helped the U.S. win its repechage and reach the title race.
The U.S. charged down the course in 5:34.610 to grab one of the two qualifying spots for the final, bettering second-place New Zealand (5:36.550) by just under two seconds.
The fourth former Badger, Ben Ruble (Minneapolis), rowed with the men's four in one of the semifinals and charged from sixth at the halfway mark, up into fourth by the finish, but one place short of qualifying for the final.
Italy (5:56.350), Great Britain (5:57.190) and Netherlands (5:57.330) captured the three spots for the finals, while Ruble and the Americans crossed the finish line in 5:59.330.
Sunday's finals air on the Olympic Channel and online at worldrowing.com.
