Hoare, Hardy pace Badgers in Big Apple

Hoare runs a UW top-10 time at the Dr. Sander Invitational

NEW YORK CITY – Day two in the Big Apple proved to be a huge day for the Wisconsin men's track and field team as the Badgers saw continued success on Saturday during the last day of competition at the Dr. Sander Invite at the Armory Track.

The dynamic duo of Oliver Hoare and Joe Hardy both posted stellar performances in the men's invitational 3000 meters. Hoare finished fifth overall with a time of 7 minutes, 54.91 seconds, which ranks ninth in school history in the event and paces the Big Ten Conference this year. Hardy crossed the line just seconds behind in 7:57.11 to take seventh. Hardy's time also marks a huge personal record for the senior, besting his previous time almost 30 seconds.

"Going into today's meet, we knew that Ollie and Joe were in pretty good shape," UW Director of Track and Field and Mick Byrne said. "When you get to a meet like today's, there's a lot of buzz surrounding the marquee events, but you have zero control over how they will be run. The pae was hot early and they both stay off the pace, pacing through 1600 meters in 4:14 as planned. Both guys closed the last 1200 meters well and they were rewarded with big PRs."

In his first track race of the season, sophomore Ben Eidenschink took seventh overall in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:14.46 seconds, marking a personal record.

Junior Eric Brown also put up a strong performance on the track during the mile. Brown crossed the finish line in 4:18.82, just shy of a PR, to finish seventh overall.

Senior Cooper Barth and teammate freshman Austin Rendon finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in their heat of the 800 meters. Barth finished in 1:54.69, and Rendon crossed the line right behind in 1:55.07 to secure their top-ten finishes.

In the 400 meters event, senior Corbin Ellis placed fifth in his heat, crossing the line in 49.31. Ellis placed 13th overall in the final standings.

Also lighting up the track for Wisconsin was junior Alex Teague, who blew past the competition in 22.17 in his heat of the 200 meters to take the crown.

In the field events, the Badgers dominated the pole vault, with three athletes earning top-ten marks. Sophomore Rashid Coulibaly took third overall with a mark of 16 feet, 8 3/4 inches (5.10m) while teammate senior Tim Guthrie cleared 16-4 3/4 (5.00m) to take fourth. Senior Jake Wallenfang tied for seventh with his mark of 15-11 (4.85m).

Sophomore Tucker Wedig enjoyed a third place overall showing in the weight throw with a mark of 63-4 3/4 (19.32m).

In the shot put ring, senior Josh McDonald took eighth overall with a toss of 56-5 3/4 (17.21m).

Next up, the Badgers will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
